Mount Vernon held off Johnstown-Monroe 35-34 Friday night in a wild non-conference clash, powered by a dominant rushing attack and standout offensive line play.
Senior quarterback Mason Richards led the way, rushing 21 times for 308 yards and four touchdowns while adding 14 passing yards.
The Mount Vernon offensive line opened massive holes, helping the team average 11.8 yards per carry on 33 attempts for 391 rushing yards. Landon Dawson contributed 22 yards and one touchdown, while Luke Mullins (48 yards) and Ben Fitzpatrick (24 total yards) also powered the ground game. Dammon Wolfe added three carries for three yards and 10 yards in punt returns.
On defense, the Yellow Jackets recorded 49 total tackles, including three sacks from Luke Mullins, Carter Hill, and K. Schlosser. Mullins also intercepted a pass to halt a Johnnies drive.
Mount Vernon kicker Jackson Hite converted all five PATs, providing the margin of victory. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 2-2 and will carry momentum into their next matchup.
