A young Utica football team demonstrated potential on Friday night in its season opener, despite a 34-0 defeat to Centerburg on the road.

According to reports, the Redskins entered the season with significant roster changes following the graduation of a large senior class. Junior quarterback Aaron Hays emerged with 143 passing yards and 40 rushing yards, providing an offensive boost for Utica. Senior receiver Hunter McKinney contributed 58 receiving yards.

On defense, Utica made several notable plays. Junior linebacker Gavin Dugan secured an interception in the second quarter, while sophomore Elijah Bland and seniors Donovan Holley and Kamden Hall each recorded three tackles to lead the team. The Redskins also managed to stop an early two-point conversion attempt, limiting Centerburg to six points on its opening drive.

Centerburg's senior Hayden Love led the Trojans with 248 receiving yards and four touchdowns, including an 80-yard pass from quarterback Blane Ball in the first quarter. Although Centerburg extended their lead with consistent scoring, Utica’s younger players gained valuable varsity experience. With Hays settling into his role as quarterback and the defense showing promise, the Redskins aim to build momentum in the coming weeks.
