Knox County residents disposed of 164.6 pounds of unused, unwanted, and expired medications and sharps containers during the DEA National Drug Take Back Day on April 26.
According to a news release, the Knox Substance Abuse Action Team (KSAAT) and local law enforcement agencies participated in the drug take-back day on Saturday. At Knox Public Health and the Mount Vernon Health Center in Mount Vernon, residents dropped off 86 pounds of drugs. The Danville Police Department collected 15.6 pounds of drugs, and 63 pounds were collected at the Fredericktown Police Department.
The release said that KSAAT thanked the Fredericktown Police Department, Danville Police Department, and the Mount Vernon Police Department for leading drop-off locations. Thanks were also extended to volunteers who contributed their time to make the event successful.
Residents who missed the event can anonymously drop off medications at any of the year-round drop boxes located at the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Fredericktown Police Department, Danville Police Department, and Mount Vernon Police Department. Medications should be placed in a clear Ziploc bag for proper disposal. Liquids, inhalers, syringes, or illegal substances should not be placed in these drop boxes.
The release mentioned that residents can request a free Deterra Drug Deactivation Bag by calling Knox Public Health at 740-392-2200. A Fall Take Back event is scheduled for October. More information about KSAAT can be found at ksaat.org.
