The Utica High School art department, run by teacher Julie Zimmerman, held its annual spring art show in the high school gym on Wednesday, April 23.

Students enrolled in an art class had the opportunity to display their art, from paintings to drawings to pottery and more. Many participants even received awards for their hard work.

The gym became a gallery, displaying intricate and carefully created art by talented young artists mastering various media. While every piece deserved its place at the table, one student's portrait stood out.

Megan Daniels, a senior at Utica High School, submitted a piece featuring a character from an animated TV show painted over various clippings from the comic book that inspired the show. This intricately designed piece won Best of Show, earning her a large trophy featuring various artwork utensils. She also won Best Depiction of Light on a Subject and Most Intricate 3-D Sculpture.

While Best of Show is an impressive title, it wasn't the only award granted on Wednesday night. Other awards included Most Realistic Drawing (Mason Bowen), Most Innovative Artist (Madison Sichina), Best Creative Cropping of a Composition (Whitney Lewis), Michelangelo Sculpture Award (Kyleigh Taylor), Most Imaginative Composition of a Subject (Riley Baker), Best Wheel Thrown Clay Piece (Gabe Conley), Andy Warhol Trendy Award (Emily Lumbatis), Best Landscape Award (Sam Farley), Best Optical Illusion Piece (Arianna Burleson), Best Nature Art Award (Bella Torrens), Best Use of Color to Express an Emotion (Mikylie Woodruff), Picasso - Best Abstract Award (Kordelia Garven), Most Art Skills Mastered in a Year (Natalie Lyon), and Most Expressive Brushwork in a Painting (Bella Torrens).
