The Fredericktown varsity girls' basketball team secured the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference (KMAC) championship with a 50-45 victory over Centerburg on Wednesday night. This win brings Fredericktown's record to 16-3, matching Centerburg's overall standing.
According to the game statistics, Callie Carpenter led the Freddies with a game-high of 24 points, along with one assist, two offensive rebounds, and two steals in 32 minutes. Mya Bryant contributed significantly with 17 points, five offensive rebounds, one assist, and two steals in 31 minutes. Ella Bouton played a crucial role in facilitating the offense, finishing with seven points, eight assists, four defensive rebounds, and five turnovers.
Fredericktown's coach Jared Pryor explained that the team built an early lead through strong offensive plays from Carpenter and second-chance opportunities created by Bryant. Centerburg managed to fight back in the second half by capitalizing on Fredericktown’s turnovers to keep the game competitive.
However, Pryor noted that the Freddies’ defense remained resilient. Crucial steals from Carpenter and Bryant were instrumental in securing their championship-clinching victory. "We knew this was going to be a battle," Pryor said. "Callie and Mya made big plays when we needed them, and Ella did a great job distributing the ball. This team earned this championship with their effort all season."
With the KMAC title now secured, Fredericktown will focus on their next matchup against Colonel Crawford on Wednesday, February 5th. Meanwhile, Centerburg aims to recover in its next contest.
