The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets Boys’ Varsity wrestling team defeated Hilliard Darby, 46-24, during a Thursday night meet, showcasing both depth and talent across various weight classes.
Mount Vernon won nine of the 14 matches, ranging from the 106-pound to the 285-pound divisions. The team’s performance highlighted their strength at multiple weight classes, with several wrestlers picking up key victories to secure the win.
The action began in the 106-pound class, where Caleb Snyder set the tone for Mount Vernon by defeating Ian Cassidy of Hilliard Darby. Preston Hempfield then added another victory, topping Dylan Santagata in the 138-pound class.
In the middleweight divisions, Mount Vernon continued its dominance. At 144 pounds, Atambai Asilbekov bested Felix Senter-Roy, while Mavrik Gregory triumphed over Logan Copper in the 157-pound class. Hayden Higgins also contributed to the team’s momentum with a win over Ethan Wenger in the 165-pound division.
The Yellow Jackets maintained their strong performance as the evening progressed. Jake Taylor earned a victory over Camden Mehmen in the 175-pound class, and Camren Schonauer added another win for Mount Vernon, defeating his opponent in the 190-pound division. The final match saw Alex Taylor secure the team’s ninth victory, triumphing over his opponent in the 285-pound class to seal the win.
With the victory, Mount Vernon improved its record for the season, continuing a strong campaign under Head Coach Corey Firebaugh. “We had a strong performance across the board tonight,” Firebaugh said. “The guys showed discipline and focus in each match. It’s great to see so many of our wrestlers stepping up, and it gives us a lot of confidence moving forward.”
