Mount Vernon's Hayden Higgins goes in for a tackle on Granville's Noble Terebuh | Matt Branson

In the last game of the season, Mount Vernon fell to Granville by a gut-wrenching score of 53-14.

It has been a rebuilding year for the Yellow Jackets, and they have been trying to find their identity all season, so the outcome of the season was that of one expected from them.

Mount Vernon came out strong in their match-up against the Blue Aces as the scored 14 points in the first quarter. Quarterback Mason Richards rushed for the first one, and wide receiver Luke Hubbard caught the second on a pass from Richards.

Granville scored 15 in the first quarter as they held a one point lead over the Yellow Jackets before scoring 23 more in the second quarter. The second half showed no other scoring for Mount Vernon, as Granville went on to score 15 more points.

All around it was a bad way to end the season for the Yellow Jackets as they finished the season 2-8 overall, and 1-2 in conference play.

Though the game was a rough way to end the year, there were some bright spots in individual performances. Richards, who has started the past couple of games behind center, completed 50 percent of his passes on the night, going 8 of 16 for 116 yards and a touchdown. He also was the leading rusher for the Yellow Jackets, rushing for 155 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown. First string Quarterback Jake Taylor was senior this year so the recent games give Richards experience behind center going into next season.

Hubbard caught five passes for 63 yards and a touchdown on the night. His fellow teammate, running back Mavrik Gregory had a slow night rushing through, carrying the rock 10 times for 32 yards.

Meanwhile, Granville, with the win, is headed to the playoffs this year. They ended the season with only one loss, and are set to face Dover High in the Region 11 playoff bracket this upcoming Friday night.

Mount Vernon failed to qualify for the postseason this year and will look to the off-season to get prepared for a hopeful better year this upcoming season.
