Richards starts for Mount Vernon in loss to Licking Valley

It was an ugly night for the local Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets, as they were outscored 48-14 by Licking Valley, in their second to last game of the regular season.

The first quarter of the game started with a shot of hope for Yellow Jacket fans. Directly following a Licking Valley touchdown, Mount Vernon’s quarterback Mason Richards led the team down the field and scored on a 9-yard run, holding the score close at 7-6.

The shot of hope soon diminished though, as Licking Valley scored three straight touchdowns over the course of the remaining first half, and went into the locker room with a 28-6 lead. 

The second half did not go much better as the Panthers came right out of the gate in the second half and scored again on a 14-yard Jet Sweep. 

With 1:40 left on the clock in the third quarter, Mount Vernon was able to score their second and final touchdown of the night. Richards found Yellow Jackets senior wide receiver Hunter Looney for a 13-yard touchdown, right in the middle of the endzone. By this time in the game the score was 42-14 in Licking Valley's favor.

The LV Panthers scored once more in the 4th quarter to seal their dominating victory, 48-14, and advance their record to 8-1 on the season. MV, on the other hand, fell to 2-7 on the season.

Licking Valley offensively dominated all four quarters, as they accounted for 523 total yards. In comparison, the Yellow Jackets mustered up a miniscule 173 yards offensively.

Richards, who had his first home start of the season, did not fare very well against the Licking Valley secondary, completing only 4 of his 14 passes for 52 yards. He did however, throw for a touchdown, and also rush for 35 yards and a touchdown.

Mount Vernon running back Mavrik Gregory ran the ball 17 times over the course of the game and established 80 yards.
