Mount Vernon Nazarene University President Carson Castleman described his first year leading the institution as a period marked by "change and growth." His presidency began on August 11, 2023.

According to a news release from Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU), Castleman said, "We’ve worked hard to steer the institution in the way that I believe is conducive for the church and for the university alike." He emphasized the accomplishments achieved in a short time as "remarkable."

The release highlighted a significant achievement with the Fairbanks Center for Global Engagement campaign. At the start of Castleman's tenure, MVNU had raised $476,000 of its $1 million goal for the center. The university has now surpassed this target, raising over $1.1 million. This progress reflects the community's commitment to integrating global perspectives into students' experiences through various opportunities.

Castleman also focused on restructuring MVNU's admissions and enrollment strategies, prioritizing enrollment growth. The university recorded a 10.2% increase in first-time freshmen for fall 2024, with overall campus growth nearing that level. In his first year, Castleman concentrated on mission alignment, fundraising, and setting up future growth. Despite an overhaul in the enrollment department, positive growth was observed.

The news release further mentioned that MVNU introduced the International Executive Studies program in late January, which now includes 170 students. The Gateway Program partners with churches, nonprofits, and corporations to enhance educational access, reflecting Castleman's dedication to community engagement. Strategic initiatives led by Castleman and his team reduced MVNU's $5.8 million deficit to $3.6 million, with plans to achieve a balanced budget within two and a half to three years.

Castleman expressed his commitment: "One of the things that I want people to know about my first year is that I am committed to doing what is best for the organization and the church at all costs." He added his personal connection to both Mount Vernon Nazarene University and the Church of the Nazarene.
