Isabel Coral and her husband, Segundo Vargas, recognized a need for a Spanish-speaking faith community when they relocated to Alingsås, Sweden, according to a Jul. 16 report. Upon arrival, they found there was neither a Church of the Nazarene presence nor any Spanish-speaking congregation in the area.
Originally from Peru, Isabel and Segundo had previously served in the Church of the Nazarene both in their home country and later in Spain. Their move to Sweden was motivated by a desire to be closer to their daughters who had settled there after marrying Swedish citizens. In response to the absence of Spanish-language ministry options locally, Isabel and Segundo began gathering people together for worship.
The group now meets regularly every Sunday in Alingsås and has expanded its reach beyond just Spanish speakers. The ministry serves third-culture individuals—those raised between different cultures—and people connected through family relationships or an interest in the Spanish language.
In late February, Cezarina Glendenning, Central Europe field strategy coordinator; Kaj Ove Bollerup, superintendent of the Scandinavia District; and church member Peter Christoffersen visited Alingsås to meet with Isabel and Segundo Coral. During this visit, they developed a strategic plan for future ministry efforts and potential church planting alongside local leaders.
Isabel is expected to be ordained through the Spain District next year as part of her ongoing commitment within the Church of the Nazarene. She and Segundo said that as their ministry continues growing, there will likely be increased need for missionaries and additional support staff.
The Eurasia Region has requested prayer for continued spiritual hunger among residents of Alingsås, as well as guidance regarding future expansion opportunities for the Church of the Nazarene throughout Sweden.
