The Northmor softball team kicked off their season this past week, going 2-2 led by a a solid week at the plate by Mahaila Strobel, who had two homers and seven RBIs to pace the offense.
The first week was up and down," said Coach Matt Wiseman. "Pitching was ok, really good one game. We have to be better. Mahaila Strobel was what we expect her to be. She hits everything hard. We played without our best player last week as Maddie Simpson was on vacation. Also our returning catcher is injured right now. We had two freshman step up big with Maddie See handling all our catching and our freshman center fielder, Kallie Wright, is playing very well, as well. We need to improve in all areas to compete with the big girls in the KMAC. We will get there."
Northmor 10, Galion 6
Northmor scored a pair of runs and never trailed in a 10-6 win over Galion, where the Mahaila Strobel had three RBIs and a homer on opening day for Golden Knights softball.
Strobel’s knock came in the first inning, driving in a pair of runs to go up 2-0. Strobel knocked in her third run of the day in the third inning on an RBI single. She went 3-for-4 with a run scored on the day.
Kate Kissling was integral both in the pitching circle and at the dish. She went 3-for-3 with a double, two walks, a run and an RBI in the win. She also pitched 4 and 1/3 innings allowing four hits, two walks, two runs and one earned, while striking out two to get the win.
Raelyn Fulk and Shelby Cooper also had big days at the plate. Fulk went 2-for-4 with a triple, a walk, three runs and an RBI. Cooper was 2-for-5 with a double, a run and an RBI. Madi See also had a triple and a run scored.
Centerburg 9, Northmor 2
The Centerburg Trojans had a big five run third inning to push their way past the Northmor Golden Knights on March 27.
Kenlee Fairall drilled a solo homer to centerfield to out the Trojans up 1-0 in the bottom of the first. They then scored five runs in five hits in the third inning, highlighted by an Abby Herren solo shot to right field. Brooklyn Pankuch and Sarah Stowe each knocked two run singles in the inning.
Stowe picked up the win, pitching all seven innings with two runs allowed and none of them earned. She allowed only three hits, while walking four and striking out six batters.
Shelby Cooper pitched three-and-two-thirds innings for the Golden Knights, allowing four runs but only one earned. She struck out five batters and walked one. Kate Kissling was the losing pitcher, allowing five runs on five hits over two-and-one-third innings.
For the Trojans, Chesnee Fairall was 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs. Lexie Moore was 2-for-3 with a walk.
Northmor’s Kallie Wright was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
Northmor 8, Centerburg 2
Northmor hosted Centerburg on March 28, and while the Trojans led after one inning, it was all Golden Knights the rest of the way in an 8-2 win led by a 15 hit barrage.
Centerburg got on the board to go up 1-0 in the first inning when Harley Webb hit into a fielder’s choice that brought home a run.
Northmor then put up a three spot in the bottom of the second. See knocked an RBI single and an error scored two runs. They scored twice more in the third inning, when Strobel smashed a homer to center and an error brought in a run. Centerburg also scored a run and it was a 5-2 ballgame.
The Golden Knights scored three more insurance runs in the sixth inning and held on to secure the win.
Strobel had another big day, homering and going 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Brooklyn Kissling had two RBIs and went 1-for-4. See had a 2-for-4 day with an RBI, and Saje Miley also went 2-for-4, knocking in a run and scoring twice. Kate Kissling smashed a double and scored, and Wright went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and two runs scored. Miley, See and Wright all had steals for the Golden Knights. Reagan See had a solid day in the nine hole of the lineup, going 3-for-4.
Shelby Cooper got the win with seven innings, two runs allowed with one earned, five hits, four walks and six strikeouts. Cooper had the team's only other hit, and also walked.
Pleasant 10, Northmor 5
Northmor had a lead heading into the sixth inning, but Pleasant went of for six unanswered runs in the final two frames to drop the Golden Knights 10-5 on March 29.
Northmor had a 3-1 lead after one, and then 5-3 after two innings of play. Pleasant tacked on a run in the fourth inning to cut the Northmor lead to one, but Pleasant took a 6-5 lead withb a two run sixth. They came back and put four insurance runs on the board in the seventh inning to secure the win.
Strobel was 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored to lead the Golden Knights. Fulk, Wright, Kate Kissling and Reagan See each had singles.
Kissling pithed seven innings allowing, allowing five earned runs, five walks and 10 hits while striking out five batters.
