The Mount Gilead girls’ basketball team improved to 6-4 with a convincing 47-26 win over KMAC rival East Knox (4-7, 1-4), as the Indians battle for the top spot in what is a tight race in the conference. Danville currently has a 5-1 conference record, but Mount Gilead is in second at 4-1.
The Indians took an 8-6 lead after one quarter, with Faith White putting four points on the board to lead the charge early. East Knox was led by Molly Totten’s four points. Mount Gilead took over in the second quarter with a 14-4 advantage, making it a 22-10 lead after two. Olivia Long and Danielle Pohlkotte each had six points in the quarter, and the half.
The dominance continued in the third quarter, with Mount Gilead outscoring the Bulldogs 15-4 to make it a 37-14 lead. Faith White had five points, while Aubrey Thomas and Kendall Neal each had four points. Pohlkotte also had a basket. East Knox had buckets from Reese Todd and Sydney Opfer.
East Knox had a 12-10 fourth quarter advantage but the damage had already been done, and the Indians were able to hold on for the victory.
Mount Gilead got 11 points out of Long and Pohlkotte, who both hit threes, in what was a spread out offensive attack. White had nine points including a three, Thomas had eight points and was 4-for-4 from the charity stripe, and Greer Simpson and Neal each had four points.
