Cota throws 7 TD passes but Odessa falls to Frenship 77-49

In what was a slugfest between two conference rivals, Frenship (7-2, 2-2) took down Odessa (5-4, 2-2) 77-49 despite Mikey Cota throwing for seven touchdowns.

Odessa went up 6-0 on a Cota touchdown pass, but Landon Hutcheson scored on a five-yard rush for Frenship. Drew Cox knocked the extra point through to make it 7-6 Frenship. Cota then hit Jalen Warren for a five-yard touchdown pass, and Sebastian Castaneda made it 13-7 on the extra point. With two minutes left in the quarter, Hudson Hutcheson connected with Leyton Stone for a 25-yard touchdown, and Cox’s kick made it 14-13.

Odessa scored on a Dejuan Green rushing touchdown with 10 minutes up and the two point conversion put Odessa up 21-14. Hutcheson connected with Chase Campbell for a touchdown pass with eight minutes to go, and Cox tied the game 21-21. With four minutes left, Odessa scored on a rushing touchdown making it 27-21, but Hutcheson threw for another touchdown pass, and Cox’s kick put the Tigers up 28-27. He struck two more times in the quarter on a pair of touchdown passes, and the extra points made it 42-27 with two minutes left in the half. Cota thew a touchdown pass of his own with a minute left in the half and a two point conversion put it 42-35 Frenship at halftime.

With 10 minutes left in the third quarter, Hudson Hutcheson used his legs to get in on a three-yard score, and an extra point put the Tigers up 49-35. They made it a 56-35 game with a touchdown run by No.16, followed by the Cox extra point. Odessa then fumbled and Frenship recovered at the 14-yard line heading in. Jaden Tackett scored to put Frenship up 63-35 with the extra point. With a minute left in the third quarter, Cota hit Ivan Carreon for a touchdown pass and it was a 63-43 game.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Hutcheson scored on a 20-yard touchdown run and the extra point made it 70-43. Cota completed a two-yard touchdown pass to Carreon with eight minutes remaining, but the two point conversion failed and Odessa trailed 70-49. Hutcheson capped off the scoring with five minutes on the clock with another touchdown pass to Stone, and Cox hit the extra point to put the score at 77-49 for the final.

Cota was 28-for-39 for 347 yards and seven touchdowns. The junior signal caller had a 138.6 passer rating on the day. Carreon caught 13 passes for 115 yards and four of the touchdowns. Warren had four catches for 133 yards and two touchdowns, while Andrew Rodriguez also found the end zone and had two catches for 20 yards. Marc Minjarez and Green each had three catches for 28 and 27 yards respectively.

Green ran 17 times for 128 yards and touchdown. Castaneda had five carries for 46 yards. 

Carreon led Odessa on defense with 10 tackles, and Jacob Pornan got to Hutcheson for a sack.

Hudson Hutcheson was 26-for-30 for 361 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for two touchdowns on 10 carries for 69 yards. 

Landon Hutcheson tallied 65 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. He also caught 11 passes for 98 yards and a score. Stone had eight catches for 154 yards and two touchdowns, and Campbell had six catches for 91 yards and a touchdown.

Next Odessa takes on Midland Legacy, who is coming off big a win over Midland. The Bronchos host the Rebels on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m.
