Mount Vernon defeated by Lexington Minutemen in comeback victory

Lexington 31, Mount Vernon 17

Mount Vernon (1-3, 0-1) couldn’t handle the duo of Joe Caudill and Markale Martin of Lexington (2-2, 1-0), who ran all over the Yellow Jackets for nearly 300 yards combined in a 31-17 win.

Mount Vernon jumped out to a 10-0 lead after one quarter, but Lexington battled back in the next three quarters including holding the Yellow Jackets scoreless in the second half in a 31-17 win for the Minutemen.

Lexington got on the board with seven minutes left in the second quarter to make it a 10-7 game on a quarterback sneak by Caudill for a touchdown and an extra point made. The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 17-7 with Mason Richards scoring on a rushing touchdown, and Gabe Montoya hitting an extra point. With two minutes left in the half, Seven Allen of Lexington took a kick return back 95 yards for a score, and an extra point made it 17-14 in favor of Mount Vernon at halftime.

Lexington added a rushing touchdown by Martin at the beginning of the third quarter to go up 21-17, and another rushing touchdownby Martin at the beginning of the fourth quarter making it 28-17. With four minutes left in the game they nailed a field goal to make it 31-17 to take the win.

The Yellow Jackets were led by senior Jonny Askew, who had 19 carries for 145 yards and a touchdown. He also caught two passes for 47 yards. Mason Richards ran seven times for 46 yards and a touchdown. Jake Taylor was 6-for-13 for 86 yards and an interception.

For Lexington, Caudill had 130 yards rushing while also completing five passes for 88 yards. Martin had 169 yards rushing for the Minutemen.

Lexington amassed 280 rushing yards on the day, and 60 yards passing for a total of 340 yards. Mount Vernon rushed for 219 yards and passed for 86 yards, totaling 305 yards.

Next up for Lexington is Wooster (4-2, 3-1) on the road on Friday at 7 p.m. Mount Vernon hosts Ashland (2-2, 0-1) on Friday night at 7 p.m.
