MOUNT VERNON – The Knox County Regional Airport has plans to add hangar space and a new snow removal equipment building in the future, Airport Manager Josh Wynn told the Mount Vernon News.

On National Aviation Day, designated as Aug. 19, Orville Wright’s birthday, the Mount Vernon News looks at the 386-acre general aviation airport south of Mount Vernon at 6481 Kinney Road.

“The Aviation Education Center is still in the works. The Knox County Airport Authority is working with OSU on the joint use agreement and is nearing the end of this important part of the process,” Wynn said.

Completing the 5,500-foot grooved runway resulted in three awards, including Quality Award for Asphalt Paving in 2020, a Quality in Construction Award and  ACEC Ohio 2021 Engineering Excellence Award, he said.

According to the airport’s website, that 100-foot wide runway meets the requirements of most corporate aircraft services.

The airport also completed a Taxiway Alpha reconstruction project to improve pavement conditions. The FAA awarded a grant in 2021 for taxi lanes around the T-hangars and Apron D construction.

“During the peak of COVID, the airport did see a brief decline in jet traffic-corporate traffic,” Wynn said. “We also experienced a decline in general aviation traffic. Traffic counts are now back up to pre-COVID numbers.”

He said that services available at the airport include flight instruction, a flight simulator, a new aircraft paint shop, aircraft maintenance, fuel (both Jet A and Avgas), and many building sites for future hangar and business development.

The airport encourages visitors, and Wynn said he and the Airport Authority “will make time for anyone who visits the Knox County Airport to show them what a wonderful airport they have and the opportunities that are out here.”
