Summer is about half over, but there are plenty of sports camps still being run at local colleges. This week, we showcase programs at Ashland University, Otterbein University and Ohio State University.
Ashland University
Men’s basketball
The Ashland University Basketball Elite Camp is on August 6 from 1 to 5 p.m. for boys entering grades nine through 12.
This camp is focused on bringing a competitive experience from all around the state of Ohio. They will be able to work with coaches from Ashland and other colleges, as well as college players and other top instructors. Campers will have drills and also 5-on-3, 3-on-3 and 1-on-1 games. The camp will take place at Kates Gymnasium in Ashland.
Football
The Football Big Man Camp will take place on July 19 for high school grades nine through 12 at the Dwight Schar Athletic Complex from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
This day camp is focused on teaching fundamentals and techniques to offensive and defensive linemen. Players must bring helmets and cleats.
The 7-on-7 tournament will also take place on July 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Jack Miller Stadium and Niss Indoor Center. The tournament is limited to 20 teams and all teams will play four games.
Soccer
Youth Day Camp runs from July 31 to August 3 at the AU intramural field and is open to boys and girls age 7 to 14. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The College ID Camp is on July 16 from 12:30-5 p.m. It involves a training session, goalkeeper training and small sided games. The camp is open to all high school girls and takes place at Ferguson Field at the Schar Athletic Complex.
Softball
There are two pitching and skills camps taking place at Ashland this summer, the first on July 18 is for graduating classes of 2024 to 2027, and then the classes of '24 and '25 on August 12. The first camp is from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the second runs from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. They will have time slots separated for offense, defense, games and a question/answer session. The camps take place at Deb Miller Field at Archer Ballpark Complex.
Volleyball
High school tournaments will be on July 29 at Kates Gymnasium from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Each team will play four matches in pool play, before the single-elimination round of the tournament. Varsity and junior varsity teams are welcome to participate.
Otterbein University
Volleyball
A one-day high school team camp will be held July 21 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. On July 22 and 23 are the high school summer tournament camps from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
All volleyball camps are at the Rike Center, and Clements Recreation and Fitness Center
Basketball
Coach Winters Basketball Camp has three sessions and the next one is the Comprehensive Skills Camp from July 17 to July 20, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is for boys entering grades two through eight.
Cardinal Elite Basktball Camp is August 5 from noon to 5 p.m. This is for boys entering grades nine through 12. There will be skill work, simulating a college practice and 1-on-1, 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 competition.
The Cardinal Girls Basketball Overnight Camp is July 24 to July 26 with drop-off at 9 a.m. and pickup at 4 p.m. the final day. It is for girls entering grades four through eight and campers receive two meals on the first day, three meals on the second and breakfast and lunch on the final day. Players should bring a pillow, sheets for a twin size bed, blanket, towels, toiletry items and clothes to play and also relax in.
The Cardinal Girls Basketball Prospect Camp is on August 6 from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
All basketball camps are at the Rike Center.
Tennis
Cardinal Boys and Girls Tennis Camp takes place July 24 to July 27 from 9:30 a.m. to noon for players aged eight to 18. It takes place at the Sanders Tennis Courts.
Ohio State University
Baseball
The High School Skills Camp will take place July 25 to 26, and will be instructed by Buckeye baseball coaches. Ohio State players will also be coaching and working with athletes. This is designed for players to showcase their skills and also get to know what it is like to be a Buckeye ballplayer. A similar camp, the Future Buckeyes Prospect Camp, is August 25-27 for grades nine and up.
For ages 13 and up is the Buckeye Gold Glove Series Infield Camp, which is for fundamental infield defense. Remaining dates are July 21, July 28, August 2 and August 4 and the camp runs 3-6 p.m.
Also for ages 13 and up is the Silver Slugger Hitting Series, which works on offensive drills. The remaining dates are July 22, July 29 and August 5, from 9 a.m. to noon. The Scarlet and Grey Catching series, for the same ages, works on catcher skills with drills and working with staff members. The remaining dates are July 22, July 29 and August 5, all of which are 1-4 p.m.
For ages 11-14 is the Elite Youth Pitching Camp, focusing on pitching fundamentals, arm care, mental aspects of pitching and strength and conditioning. The next one is on August 6 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Elite Youth Hitting Camp focuses on offensive drills and is for anyone looking to take their game to the next level. Upcoming camps are on July 23 and 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
All camps are at Bill Davis Stadium and Nick Swisher Field.
Field Hockey
The elite field hockey camp is July 18 and 19 for grades six through 12, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. It focuses on team strategies, goal scoring and small games, and also has specialized training for goalkeepers.
The camp is at Buckeye Varsity Field.
Golf
Golf summer camp is taking place July 19-21 for ages 8 to 16. This camp is limited to the first 18 boys per age group and involves instruction in short game, full swing and course play. Ages 14-16 go from 8 to 11 a.m., ages 11-12 are noon to 3 p.m. and ages 8-10 are 4 to 7 p.m.
Men’s gymnastics
Men’s gymnastics has has a is Higher Schooler Camp on August 7 to 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for grades nine through 12.
For women’s gymnastics there is a camp August 4-6 at Steelwood Athletic Training Facility. The morning is for gymnasts Level 7 and above and ages 11 and older. Afternoon is for all levels ages 8 and up. Instruction is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then again from 2 to 6 p.m.
Lacrosse
Ohio State is offering Buckeye Skills Day Men's Camp for kindergarten through fourth graders July 17-19 from 9 a.m. until noon. The focus is on fundamentals, position-specific skill development and other drills. Prospect Day Camp is on July 20 for graduation years of 2024, 2025 and 2026. This is a showcase opportunity where college coaches can evaluate player ability. It runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The camps take place at Buckeye Lacrosse Stadium.
Men’s volleyball
OSU's Elite Camp is scheduled for July 28-30 for players in grades seven through 12. It involves instruction from college coaches and is a chance for players to display their skills, while also learning how to improve. There are a number of sessions throughout the camp that take place at the Covelli Center.
From July 31 to August 3 is the Future Buckeyes Coed Camp from grades three to eight, which works on passing, setting, attacking and serving fundamentals. Sessions are from 9-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-3 p.m. at the Covelli Center.
Women’s volleyball
The Summer Li'l Spikers Series for kindergarten through fifth grade is July 18-20. The focus is fundamental skills while also building mentorships with the Buckeye players. Instruction runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Covelli Center.
