Eight local girls and 10 boys qualify for State track finals

Sixlocal schools, represented by 18 student-athletes, will have their banners and logos flying at the 2023 OHSAA state track meet, set for June 2-3, 2023, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium (Ohio State University, Columbus). The event is a showcase officially billed as the OHSAA 115th annual boys and 48th annual girls state track and field tournament. Five schools will have eight girls competing, and four schools will have 10 qualifiers on the boys' side.

Local Division I qualifiers

In boys events, none qualified locally. Number of athletes: 384; number of schools represented: 125.

In girls events, none qualified locally. Number of athletes: 370; number of schools represented: 119.

Local Division II qualifiers

In boys events, none qualified locally. Number of athletes: 381; number of schools represented: 132.

In girls events, three student-athletes qualified from two schools. Number of athletes: 356; number of schools represented: 121.

From Fredericktown, Ella Bouton (ninth grade) – shot put and Elsa Hoam (12th grade) – 1600M.

From Highland, Juliette Laracuente-Huebner (12th grade) – 100M hurdles, 200M dash, long jump and high jump.

Local Division III qualifiers

In boys events, 10 qualified locally from four schools. Number of athletes: 369; number of schools represented: 131.

From Northmor, Cowin Becker (10th grade) – 4x400R; Bo Landin (10th grade) – 4x400R; Connor Radojcsics (12th grade) – 4x400R and pole vault and Lucas Weaver (12th grade) – 4x400R.

From East Knox, Nathan Streby (12th grade) – 800M.

From Loudonville, Braden Carr (ninth grade) – pole vault.

From Mount Gilead, Will Baker (10th grade) – 1600M, 3200M and 4x800R; Parker Bartlett (10th grade) – 4x800R; Aaron Gannon (12th grade) – 800M and 4x800R and Owen Hershner (ninth grade) – 4x800R.

In girls events, five student-athletes qualified from three schools. Number of athletes: 337; number of schools represented: 114.

From Northmor, Natalie Hunter (10th grade) – pole vault.

From East Knox, Isabella Grennell (10th grade) – shot put.

From Loudonville, Kenzie Cutlip (12th grade) – long jump; Tess Shultz (10th grade) – 1600M and Corri Vermilya (11th grade) – 100M hurdles and 300M hurdles.

                   

Regional results

Local athletes had to pass the regional tests last week to qualify for the state meet. Among the regional bests were four wins by Highland's Juliette Laracunete-Huebner, an 800M victory by East Knox's Nathan Streby, a silver and a bronze by Mount Gilead's Will Baker, and relay gold by the Indians.

Laracuente-Huebner wins four golds at Lexington

At the Division II, Region 6 meet at Lexington, May 25-27, local student-athletes had the following results:

Grant Hartley (Fredericktown) was 13th in 400M prelims. Hunter Bolton (Highland) was eighth in the 800M finals. Owen Krabill (Fredericktown) was seventh in the 1600M finals. Matthew Miller (Highland) was 12th in the 3200M finals. Toby Rogers (Highland) was 16th in the 110M hurdles prelim and 16th in the 300M hurdles prelim. Highland's 4x400 relay team finished 10th, and Fredericktown's relay team was 12th in prelims. In the 4x800 relay finals, Highland was seventh, Fredericktown was 10th, and Centerburg finished 14th.

Joel Roberts (Highland) was 10th in the high jump, Kieran Taylor was eighth in the pole vault and Hayden Quinif was 15th. Mason Lanthorn (Centerburg) was 12th in the discus.

Juliette Laracuente-Huebner (Highland) quadrupled in the girls' events, winning four gold medals. Laracuente-Huebner won the 200M dash, in 24.68, by a margin of 0.53 seconds. Laracuente-Huebner also won the 100M hurdles in 14.29, a margin of 0.62 seconds. She took the high jump at 5'5" and won the long jump at 19'2.75", a margin of 1'6.25".

Elsa Hoam (Fredericktown) placed fourth in the 1600M, and Lauren Garber (Highland) was 10th. Fredericktown's 4x800 relay team ran seventh, and Highland's team finished 14th. Sydney Wilson (Fredericktown) placed seventh in the pole vault, Ella Bouton (Fredericktown) was sixth in the discus and placed fifth in the shot put, with Alexis Eusey (Highland) placing ninth in the shot.

 

Streby wins 800M at Heath

In Division III, Region 11 action at Heath, May 24-26, Nathan Streby (East Knox) won the 800M finals in 1:53.99, a margin of 4.26 seconds. Aaron Gannon (Mount Gilead) was fourth, and Lucas Weaver (Northmor) was fifth. Will Baker (Mount Gilead) placed second in the 1600M, only 0.09 seconds out of first, and Baker was third in the 3200M.

Quade Harris (Mount Gilead) finished 10th, and Bo Landin (Northmor) was 14th in the 200M prelims; Jonathan Miller (Mount Gilead) was 14th in the 400M prelims; Peyton Horn (Danville) placed eighth in the 300M hurdles finals; Mount Gilead's 4x100 relay team finished ninth, and the Indians' 4x200 team was eighth, after winning the prelims. Also, in the prelims, Danville's 4x200 relay team was 10th, and Northmor finished 11th. Northmor's 4x400 relay squad finished second, and East Knox was fifth. Mount Gilead took gold in the 4x800 relays, with Northmor fifth. Owen High (Mount Gilead) was ninth in the high jump; Cowin Becker was sixth in the long jump; Connor Radojcsics came in fourth in the pole vault, and teammate Cade Miracle was seventh. Bryer Boeshart (Danville) finished seventh in the shot put.

In the girls' competition, Madilyn Elson (Mount Gilead) was 10th in the 100M prelims and 11th in the 400M prelims. Loey Hallabrin (Cardington-Lincoln) ran eighth in the 800M finals. Taylor Severt (East Knox) finished 13th in the 3200M finals. Sage Whetnall (Cardington-Lincoln) placed 15th in the 300M hurdles prelims. The Mount Gilead 4x100M relay team was ninth in the prelims, and the Indians were seventh in the 4x200 relay finals. Natalie Hunter (Northmor) was fourth in the pole vault, and in the discus, Allison Crouse (Centerburg) was 10th, Mikala Harris (Mount Gilead) was 13th, and Isabella Grennell (East Knox) placed 14th. Grennell finished fourth in the shot put, with Andrea Holland (Danville) placing seventh.

 

Mount Vernon shut out at Pickerington

In Division I, Region 3 Regional competition at Pickerington, May 24-26, Mount Vernon's Marissa Rutter finished 11th in the 100M hurdles prelim, Brooklyn Thayer finished 11th in the discus, and Navaeh Williams was sixth in the shot put.
