Cardington-Lincoln takes two of three at C-L Invite
Cardington-Lincoln took advantage of the home court and home crowd to win two of three matches but fell to Newark in the championship round of the Cardington-Lincoln Volleyball Invite on Aug 27.
In the first round, the Lady Pirates beat Worthington Christian 2-0 (25-18, 25-20). They moved on to the next round and beat Bishop Ready 2-0 (25-10, 25-11), then met Newark in the championship, which they pushed to three sets before falling, 2-1 (26-24, 19-25, 25-19).
Leading the way for the Lady Pirates was Cadie Long with 47 digs for the day, highlighted by 20 against Newark.
Cardington coach Ryan Treese said, “We battled really hard against a huge Newark team. They had four or five 6-footers."
Milestones: Audrey Brininger is now 17 kills away from 1,000. Jadine Mills surpassed 1,000 assists for her career.
Highland edges Jonathon Alder, 3-2
The Lady Scots (4-0) traveled to Jonathan Alder on Saturday, and all three teams were pushed to the limit. The Highland freshmen (2-1) fell 25-21, 9-25, 25-9, and the JV (4-0) won 26-24, 14-25, 25-19, before the varsity pulled out the five-set victory.
The first set saw the Scots work their way to a 20-16 lead, but numerous errors down the stretch cost them as they were outscored 9-2 the rest of the way. In the second set, the Scots were ahead 16-11, but the Pioneers scored time after time to pull out that set as well with a 14-6 run. In the third, the Scots began to turn the tide and with the help of 10 kills by Kameron Stover, the Scots cruised 25-14. In the set, the Scots accumulated 14 kills, 6 aces and a block, leaving little margin for error by Alder. The fourth saw the Scots grab a 8-6 lead and slowly pull away to 11-7, then 20-14, before a clinching ace by Larsen Terrill.
The deciding set was all Highland as the offense was clicking on all cylinders, scoring 14 points with 11 kills (four by Stover, three each by Alexis Eusey and Brooke Schott), two aces by Zoya Winkelfoos and a Eusey/Schott block.
Highland leaders included Kameron Stover with 27 kills and 17 digs, Larsen Terrill with 41 assists and seven kills, Brooke Schott with nine kills and four blocks, Zoya Winkelfoos with five service aces and 7 kills and Camryn Miller with 21 digs and nine assists.
Utica gets to final in Tornado Classic
Utica got into the final in Saturday’s Tornado Classic and finished with a 1-2 mark and second place.
Coach Lisa Ritzer said, “We came out strong during pool play to finish with a record of 1-1. We battled with West Muskingum in the second pool play game and took it to three sets with a close third set. Marietta was a tough opponent. They have a few strong hitters. We continued to work hard and are showing growth in our play during each game."
The Redskins took on Northridge in the first round and won 2-0 (25-124, 25-13). Carlie Parsons led the ‘Skins with five kills, two aces and four digs. Emilee Ellis had five aces and four digs, and Lexi Wiegand had six digs.
In the match vs. West Muskingum, Utica lost 2-1 ( 25-23, 16-25, 26-24). Emma Kimpel had nine kills, three aces and 10 digs for Utica, Carlie Parsons had seven kills, four aces and four digs, Alexa Gosnell had four aces, nine assists and nine digs, and Emilee Ellis finished with three aces, eight assists and five digs. Abby Buchanan had three kills for Utica, Carlie Parsons had three kills, three aces and six digs, Emma Kimpel had four kills and three digs, Riley Thompson had three kills and Emilee Ellis had 12 assists and two digs.
