Cougars stay undefeated; Lady Cougars fall in soccer

In Mount Vernon Nazarene soccer action last weekend, the men's soccer team moved to 3-0 with a 2-0 win over Aquinas College, while the Lady Cougars fell on the road to No.1-ranked Tennessee Southern, 4-1.

Th MVNU men’s soccer team (3-0-0, 0-0-0) returned to CH4 Stadium on Aug. 27 and kept its undefeated season intact.

MVNU got the scoring started in the 15th minute as Keon Boney scored on a ball from Ryan Walters. The goal from Boney is his second on the season. Tiago DeJesus also scored for the second straight match. The freshman from Osceola, Ind., found the back of the net in the 36th minute, putting MVNU up 2-0 in the first half. Joshua Sitney continues to create scoring chances for the Cougars as his assist on the goal was his second in as many games.

Joshua Dunn played a strong match in goal for MVNU. The senior shut out the Saints, finishing the match with nine saves in his 90 minutes of work.

MVNU hosts Lourdes University at CH4 Stadium on Aug. 31. Kickoff against the Gray Wolves is set for 4pm.

Lady Cougars faced national champs

The Lady Cougars played in their second away match of the season, and they knew beforehand that they would be facing a tough opponent in the NAIA defending national champions.

The scoring in the match started early as Tennessee Southern quickly scored in the 11th minute with a goal by Estelle Badoedana Ekada. 

The Lady Cougars spent the rest of the half trying to equalize; however, Tennessee Southern outshot MVNU 12-3 in the first 45 minutes. For the match, the Firehawks outshot MVNU 21-8. The Firehawks had 12 shots on goal, while MVNU finished with five.

Tennessee Southern added to its lead as Ravynne Wilson found the back of the net in the 50th minute. Ekada scored again in the 70th minute. The Firehawks added another goal in the 70th minute from Ekada. The Lady Cougars responded quickly with a goal in the 72th minute from Sarah Townsend, making the score 3-1. Tennessee Southern had the final goal of the night in the 87th minute from Gabrielle Forsythe. Hannah Miller finished the night with six saves in goal for the Lady Cougars.
