Mount Vernon Junior League golf action and instruction completed its fifth week at the Vernon View Golf Course, 901 Beech St. in Mount Vernon, with Grayson Workman firing a group-low score of 29 to lead 17 advancing golfers on the links.
The program is instructed by Mount Vernon Nazarene University assistant golf coach and former PGA Canada Tour winner T.T. Crouch, along with Mount Vernon H.S. golf coach Anthony Savage.
Wendy’s Division
In the Wendy’s Division, seven golfers moved up levels by recording a 36 or less as 11 golfers took to the links in the division.
In Level 5 action, Austin Hammond kept his lead in the division by firing a 36. He moves on to Level 6 play later this week. In Level 4 play, Somi Bright advanced with a 36, and Silas Bailey just missed the cut with a 38. All five Level 3 golfers advanced, with Grayson Workman recording the lowest round for the division, with a 29 – also the lowest score carded among all golfers on the day. Also advancing were Luke Moore (34), Ava Parker-Cuervo (35) and Tanner Nutter and Jillian Williams, who both shot 36. No Level 2 golfers advanced last week.
After five weeks, Hammond leads the division with a cumulative score of 138. Workman is second at 139, Tyler Marshall sits in third at 140, Tyler Ing is fourth with a 142 and Bailey is fifth at 143.
Mount Vernon GMC Division
In the Mount Vernon GMC Division, five of the 10 golfers who teed off advanced to the next level.
GMC Division leader Cooper Lowe added to his stranglehold on the leaderboard by taking a two-level lead. The only Level 4 golfer, he advanced to Level 5 by firing a 33. None of the four Level 3 golfers advanced and will try again in that level this week. Four of five Level 2 golfers moved on to Level 3, led by David Bright and Greyson Ruther, who each shot a 34. Kenton Strouse and Paxton Strouse also advanced by virtue of their 36s.
Through five weeks, Lowe has a commanding lead with a cumulative score of 128. Leo Bailey is second at 141, Bright is third with a 146, Cody Dapprich is in fourth at 148 and Evan Palmer has a 149 for fifth place.
Savage Pools and Patios Division
In the Savage Pools and Patios Division, six of 11 golfers advanced.
Division leader Colin Fox narrowly missed advancing as the only Level 4 golfer in the division, as he carded a 38. In Level 2 play, Jeff Mezie fired the lowest round of the day in the division with a 31, followed by Sutton Quinlivan’s 32. They advanced, as did Madison Lauthers (35), Wyatt Artrip (35) and Brady Prettyman (36). One of two Level 1 golfers advanced, with Maddox Mezie firing a 36 to move up.
The Junior League runs every Thursday from 10 a.m. - noon at the Vernon View Golf Course, with play ending July 21, and is limited to 30 players (boys and girls) ages 10-18. Instruction focuses on putting and chipping, basic swing mechanics, the rules of golf and on-course play.
Levels for golfers are: Level 1 – putting; Level 2- 25 yards; Level 3 – 50 yards; Level 4 – 100 yards; Level 5 -0 150 yards; Level 6 – 200 yards. To advance levels, the player must shoot a 36 or better. The player who has advanced the furthest after week seven will be the champion of their division. If multiple players have advanced to the same level, the player with the lowest score will be deemed the winner. Division sponsors are Wendy’s, Mount Vernon GMC and Savage Pools & Patios.
