March is National Nutrition Month, a good time to look at Knox Public Health's Mothers Milk Bank Drop Site, a program run by KPH's WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) staff.

WIC staff help moms through the process of the initial phone screening, wellness testing and donation, all while answering lactation questions along the way.

Human milk is a liquid tissue (like blood) and gives life-saving benefits to all newborn infants, including preterm babies.

Breast milk is to fragile babies like a blood transfusion to a trauma patient – it has the same life-saving benefits as well as protective factors.

One ounce of breast milk will feed three preemie babies for a day.

Since the beginning of the milk bank in July 2020, over 40 gallons have been donated of life-saving liquid gold.
