MOUNT VERNON – Paving began in Mount Vernon last week, with work moving to Eastern Star Road on Oct. 22.

“The bike trail around Center Lake at Ariel-Foundation Park has its first layer of asphalt. So, what that means is that we still have to do the sidewalks, and there's some curbing that we need to do on Potwin,” Mayor Matt Starr told the Mount Vernon News.

Crews need to finish up the driveways and the aprons that merge right into the road itself. Once those are done, bricks will go in.

The Sandusky Street sidewalk project is going to start Nov. 1. Smith Paving won that contract to install sidewalks from Franklin Street to the north side of Pleasant Street, Starr said. A Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds the project.

Based in Norwalk, Smith Paving and Excavating Inc. has operated since 1978 as a producer of concrete streets, curbs and gutters, and drives and sidewalks. Its service area covers most of northern Ohio.

"Our goal is to provide a finished product with aesthetic value, serviceability and durability," according to the company's website.

City staff completes CPR, AED training

More Mount Vernon employees completed CPR and AED (automated external defibrillator) training given by the city’s Fire Department.

Staff from the municipal court, the clerk's office, the probation office and the law director's office are fully trained in those topics, Starr said.

“That was one of the things that we started when we took office. We wanted all of our staff to know CPR and the AED,” he said.

Students operate fire hoses

Students from the Knox Learning Center visited the city’s Fire Department and got the chance to operate fire hoses and see how other firefighting equipment works.

Starr joined the Fire Department in a visit to Twin Oaks Elementary School for a demonstration Oct. 22. The students were given tours and demonstrations of the equipment firefighters brought to their school.

Leaf pickup begins next week

Starr also wanted to remind city residents that leaf pickup begins Monday, Nov. 1. Leaves should be raked up to the street but not on the street, as those leaves would end up in storm sewers, causing big problems.
