MOUNT VERNON – Once again, a local coalition of faith communities, institutions and leaders in Knox County has worked together to create a fall anti-racism class for the community, called “Overcoming Racism Classes.”
This year’s discussions will center on a book by Heather McGee called "The Sum of Us" (Paragraphs Bookstore has copies with a generous discount for the class).
Because of the pandemic, this sixth annual Overcoming Racism class is scheduled outside at the First Nazarene Church at 807 Coshocton Ave. Masks and social distancing will be required, and it is also suggested attendees bring their own camp chairs. The class will meet for five weeks on Mondays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. starting Aug. 23.
The Rev. Scott Elliott, one of the Overcoming Racism leaders and founders, said, “Last year’s class went well outside and was nicely attended; we hope to repeat that experience. We have lined up a great group of leaders. Before the first class, participants should read up to Page 39 in the book, but there no other prerequisites and no fees. Anyone willing to respectfully participate is welcome and invited.”
