MVGSL roundup: Cross leads Wigal to MVGSL 12U tourney title

Wigal Orthodontics took the lead with a five-run third inning and blew it open with nine runs in the fourth on its way to capturing the Mount Vernon Girls Softball League 12U tournament championship with a 22-9 win over Charlie’s Body Shop on June 27, at Memorial Park.

Cheree Cross and Maddy Ball had two hits each to lead Wigal. Cross hit a home run, Nevaeh Serio hit a triple, Haylei Higgins added a double and Riley Johnston struck out five batters.

Rylan Winkler, Imogen Winkler and Jaiah Barnett had two hits apiece for Charlie’s, which rallied for four runs in the top of the third to tie the game at 8. Rylan Winkler hit a home run, Imogen Winkler had two doubles and Barnett added a double.

Wigal Orthodontics 14, Charlie’s Body Shop 2

Charlie’s scored twice in the top of the first inning. But Wigal responded with three runs in the bottom half before blowing it open with a seven-run second on its way to a 14-2 win in a semifinal matchup on June 26.

Haylee Hays, Maddy Ball and Haylei Higgins had two hits apiece to pace Wigal. Hays hit a home run and Ball added a double. Riley Johnston went the distance in the circle for the win.

Imogen Winkler had one strikeout in the circle and was one of seven different batters with a hit to lead Charlie’s.

Charlie’s Body Shop 11, Lady Amvets 10

Charlie’s surged ahead early and held off Lady Amvets to avoid elimination and secure a spot in the championship game with an 11-10 win in the consolation final on June 26.

Imogen Winkler, Chloe Peterson and Jaiah Barnett had two hits each to lead Charlies, who put the game out of reach with a two-run third inning.

Savanah Crawford had three hits and Keely Kline hit a home run to lead Lady Amvets.

Charlie’s Body Shop 11, Lady Amvets 8

Charlie’s scored six times in the first inning and added five runs in the second to cruise to an 11-8 win over Lady Amvets in the first round on June 26.

Chloe Peterson and Jaiah Barnett each hit doubles for Lady Amvets. Peterson and Imogen Winkler combined for the victory in the circle.

Adriana Hitchcock had three hits, including a triple and a double, to lead Charlie’s, which rallied for four runs in the third before falling short. Hitchcock added three strikeouts in the circle.

Playing for Wigal Orthodontics this season were Maddy Ball, Cheree Cross, Haylee Hays, Haylei Higgins, Bella Howes, Riley Johnston, Irelynne Moffat, Neveah Serio, Emma Seymour, Abby Smithson and Lexi Taylor and coaches Danielle Moffat, John Moffat and Dan Tedrow.
