MOUNT VERNON – The Knox County Park District will continue its Virtual Youth Fishing Tournament series on Saturday, June 19.

The event will be from 8 a.m. until noon and is open to ages 7–18. The tournament will be run through a free app called "Fish Donkey."

"We invite you to download the app and register to participate in this fun event as we team up with Ariel-Foundation Park to offer lots of nice prizes," the Park District said in a release on the Ariel-Park Foundation website. "We are limiting the tournament to 75 entries and you MUST fish a body of water in Knox County."

This month's virtual fishing tournament is one in a series of monthly events that began in April and runs through September. Future dates include July 10, Aug. 18 and Sept. 25, the release said.

"We had such a successful program last year hosting these virtual youth tournaments that we have set our schedule for 2021," the Park District said on its website. Since the threat of Covid-19 continues, our youth programs are canceled and it is with regret, but we also value the importance of keeping everyone safe during this time."

Bodies of water that can be fished include the Wolf Run Park pond, several lakes in Ariel-Foundation Park and the Kokosing River, the Park District said.

"If you do fish the lakes at Ariel-Foundation Park, please consider recording the fish you caught by completing their fish survey (at the bottom of the web page)," the Park District said on its website. Also provided ... is a Fish ID list of those species found in the main stem of the Kokosing River and their locations. This information is being provided by Brian Zimmerman, OSU river ecologist and research associate with The Ohio State University."

Another program that youths can participate in this year is the Fish Ohio initiative. More information on this program can be found on the Ohio Division of Wildlife website.

Other sponsors for the Virtual Youth Fishing Tournament include Ariel-Foundation Park, the Kokosing Valley Jr. Anglers and THR Creekside Home Inspections.
