MOUNT VERNON – In advance of their Women’s Equality Day on Thursday, Aug. 26, the Knox County Democratic Women (KCDW) will be holding a promotional T-shirt design contest, with entries due by June 20.
The event is planned to spark interest in creating “parity in women’s wages and leadership roles, as well as greater representation for women in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math),” a press release from KCDW said.
The winner’s graphic will be displayed on this year’s shirts, which the group will be selling to raise both awareness of current barriers to women’s equality and funds for KCDW, the release stated.
Contestants should submit their black-and-white design with art inspired by Women’s Equality Day to Mary Chapa at marychapa.knox@gmail.com no later than June 20.
The group also reported the winners of its recent essay contest for graduating seniors. Blake Johnson took the first-place prize of $500, while his fellow Centerburg High School classmate Adriana Losey was awarded $250 as runner-up. Johnson’s essay appears in this issue of the Mount Vernon News.
The KCDW’s mission is to identify, recruit and train women to hold positions of leadership in the government and community at all levels. They meet at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month.
