MOUNT VERNON – A Food For The Hungry (FFTH) summer grant program is accepting applications between May 26 and June 7, with a goal of enabling churches, agencies and other organizations to fund summer meal programs.

In a press release from FFTH this week, the organization credited strong donations for its ability to sustain outreach to the needy, even after a tough pandemic year. The most recent campaign raised $424,030 (a record) and 15.3 truckloads of food.

“We are thankful for these funds so generously donated by the community as well as organizations like the United Way of Knox County, AEP and others,” Lisa Mazzari, drive coordinator, said in the release.

The availability of meals is crucial, particularly during summer months when children will be out of school. Eligible programs are ones providing meals through Aug. 19 and those that help families that do not fit into the Mid-Ohio Food Bank’s income guidelines. The individual grants can total up to $2,000 each.

Applications must be received by noon on Monday, June 7, and should be submitted online at foodforthehungrycares.org. Awards will be announced no later than Thursday, June 17.

“We are thankful for those groups who provide nutritious food throughout the summer months while students are home,” said Samantha Scoles, FFTH president. “The summer grant program is critical to meeting the financial needs of our food pantries and their clients.”
