MOUNT VERNON – After a one-year hiatus due to pandemic restrictions, the Mount Vernon Memorial Day Parade will return May 31 with a theme of “Reflect and Remember,” a press release from the Patriotic Memorial Committee said.
“The Memorial Service which follows the parade has been approved by Knox Public Health,” organizers said in the release. “However, we are still awaiting guidance from the governor on parades. With hopeful expectations, we are planning to conduct the parade but will need to officially decide as more information becomes available.”
Scheduled for Monday, May 31, the parade (pending approval) will start at 10:30 a.m., traveling west on East High Street (at George) to Gay Street and then exit south on Gay Street to Vine Street, east on Vine Street to Park Street, north on Park to East High and east on High Street to the staging area. The staging area at East High and George streets will open at 8 a.m., with arrival expected no later than 9 a.m. Participants may enter the staging area by way of Edgewood Road.
In keeping with the solemn occasion, the following restrictions will be in place:
- Please, no politically slanted parade entries.
- Candy must be distributed by walkers.
- No candy should be thrown from vehicles.
- No clowns will be allowed to participate.
- Animal entries must stay off private lawns, and cleanup must be provided for the animals.
- All entries must reflect the parade theme.
- This parade is about those lives that were lost protecting our freedom.
