Baseball roundup: Bulldogs run win streak to 8

Weston Melick and Bryar Householder continue to do damage at the top of the East Knox lineup.

The duo had three hits apiece to lead the Bulldogs to a 13-9 win in eight innings at Coshocton in non-league play on Thursday, May 13.

It came two days after they accounted for four hits, five runs and four RBIs to lead the Bulldogs to a 12-2 win in five innings over Loudonville in non-league play on Tuesday, May 12, in Howard.

Melick had five RBIs, including two in the eighth inning; and Carson Steinmetz had three hits, four RBIs and three runs for East Knox against Coshocton.

Melick and Householder had two hits apiece, Melick scored four runs and Householder drove in three against the Loudonville. Shane Knepp had two RBIs and two runs, and Sam Printz allowed two earned runs over five innings for the win over the Redbirds.

Mount Vernon, Lexington split in OCC play

Six consecutive batters reached base to help Mount Vernon rally for four runs in the sixth inning on its way to a 4-3 win over host Lexington in Ohio Cardinal Conference play on Wednesday, May 12.

The win helped the Yellow Jackets bounce back from a 2-1 loss to the Minutemen on Tuesday, May 11, in Mount Vernon.

Konnor Daughriety tied Wednesday’s game at 1 with an RBI single in the sixth. Ethan Laslo and Blake Meyer followed with back-to-back doubles to push the lead to 4-1.

Landon Hamilton hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to pull Lexington with one, but Caden Rowland finished off a complete-game victory with a strikeout for the Jackets.

Owynn Gleason worked a one-out walk in the fifth inning and scored the tying run on a passed ball with two outs to knot the Tuesday game 1-1.

It stayed that way until Chase Carter hit a walk-off single to lift the Minutemen to a 2-1 victory in eight innings.

Trenton Kane-Sapp struck out nine batters over 7 1/3 innings but took the loss.

Carter also went 7 1/3 innings for Lexington, allowing one unearned run, but he didn’t factor in the decision.

Utica falls out of LCL lead

Two weeks ago, Utica found itself down 6-4 to Licking Valley in a Licking County League contest when Mother Nature intervened. When play resumed on Wednesday, May 12, Tanner Parsons hit an RBI single in the fourth inning, and Roman Gamble led off the fifth with a single and scored on an error to tie it up.

But the Panthers got an RBI single from Hayden Rodgers and another from Gavin Bragg in the seventh to win an 8-6 decision, knocking Utica out of title contention in the Cardinal Division.

Parsons went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, and Josh Dillon added two hits and two runs to lead Utica.

Bodee Creech had three hits for Licking Valley.

Hunter Billman crushed a two-run homer to give Utica all the runs it needed in a 4-1 win at Heath in LCL play on Tuesday, May 11.

Dillon had three hits and scored twice, and Collin McCullough tossed six innings of relief to notch the win.

Billman had another solid game, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs, but host Utica fell to Johnstown 8-7 in LCL action on Thursday, May 13.

Tanner Parsons also drove in three for Utica, which rallied for three runs in the seventh before running out of gas.

Despite solid pitching, Trojans split

Joe Tepper struck out 12 batters in a complete game to lead host Centerburg to an 8-1 win over Loudonville in non-league play on Wednesday, May 12.

Devon Pounds and Drew Williams hit back-to-back RBI singles to give host Delaware the lead, and Pounds made it stand in a 3-2 over the Trojans on Thursday, May 13.

Tepper allowed one unearned run on three hits and a walk over his seven innings of work against the Redbirds. Dakota Baer and Brock Hurtt had two hits and scored two runs each to lead the Trojans on offense.

Griffin Collins was also solid on the mound for Centerburg against Delaware, allowing two earned runs in a complete game.

Minnick leads Scots to non-league split

Luke Cain’s two-run single in the first inning gave Highland the lead, and the Fighting Scots cruised to 12-2 win in five innings over Lucas in non-league play on Thursday, May 13, in Sparta.

Logan Shaffer went the distance to pick up the win for Highland, and Rider Minnick had two hits and two RBIs.

Blake Jodrey hit an RBI single and Brock Church followed with a two-run double, but Highland’s last-inning rally fell short in a 9-6 loss at Hilliard Davidson in non-league play on Wednesday, May 12.

Minnick had three hits, and Jodrey and Church had two hits each to lead the Scots.

Cam Coleman had three hits and two RBIs, and Mitchell Steele allowed one earned run in a complete game to get the win for the Wildcats.

River Valley 3, Fredericktown 2

Joey Dranschak went 4-for-4 — the biggest hit being an RBI single in the seventh inning — to lift River Valley over host Fredericktown in non-league play on Thursday, May 13.

Ben Mayse allowed no earned runs in a complete-game victory for the Vikings.

Brady Lester had two hits to lead the Freddies, who had a 14-game winning streak snapped.
