Softball roundup: Melick's 2 HRs lead Bulldogs to district semi

Shanda Melick cracked two homers and drove in seven runs to lead East Knox to a 22-0 win in five innings over 18th-seeded Wellington in the second round of the Division IV district tournament on Thursday, May 13, in Howard.

Natalie Smith had three hits, four runs and three RBIs; and Cami Bailey, Kayla Finch and Smith combined for a no-hitter in the circle for the ninth-seeded Bulldogs.

Danville 28, Patriot Prep 0 (5)

Taryn Mickley, Cami Newbold and Keura Schilling each went deep to help top-seeded Danville roll to a 28-0 win in five innings over 19th-seeded Patriot Prep.

Newbold had three hits, five RBIs and three runs; and Maddy Wine, Grace Gronberg and Taylor Price combined for a no-hitter to lead the Blue Devils, who will host rival East Knox in a district semifinal on Tuesday.

Fredericktown 9, Pleasant 4

Alyssa Perkins drove in four runs to lead Fredericktown to a 9-4 win at Pleasant in the second round of the Division III district tournament on Wednesday, May 12, in Marion.

Perkins hit a two-run single to jump-start a five-run third inning that gave the ninth-seeded Freddies a 6-0 lead over the seventh-seeded Spartans. She added a two-run single in the fourth inning that pushed the lead to 8-0.

Sydney Sansom had three hits and scored three runs, Emma Hatfield added two hits, two runs and an RBI; and Miranda Payne allowed three earned runs in a complete-game win for Fredericktown.

Buckeye Valley 2, Highland 1

Alexa Richardson’s solo home run proved to be the game-winner, and Liz Hamilton made it stand as Buckeye Valley defeated host Highland in the second round of the Division II district tournament on Thursday, May 13, in Sparta.

Savannah Fitzpatrick led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple and scored on a passed ball to give the seventh-seeded Fighting Scots an early 1-0 lead.

That’s all Hamilton gave up, however. She struck out 16 batters in a complete game to earn the win for the ninth-seeded Barons.

Stevie Asher was also solid for Highland, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in a complete game, but she took the loss.

River Valley 2, Utica 0

Shelby Westler’s two-run triple in the third inning proved to be the difference as host River Valley defeated Utica 2-0 in the second round of the Division II district tournament on Thursday, May 13, in Caledonia.

Delaney Myers struck out eight in a complete-game, two-hit shutout for the eighth-seeded Vikings.

Ryleigh Lees suffered the tough-luck loss, allowing two unearned runs in a complete game for 13th-seeded Utica.

Elgin 3, Centerburg 2

Kaitlyn Tenzos hit an RBI double and Alie Crouse followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 2 for Centerburg in the seventh inning, but Katie Yates won it with a walk-off single for host Elgin in the second round of the Division III district tournament on Wednesday, May 12, in Marion.

Shelby Morris allowed two earned runs and struck out seven in a complete game but suffered the tough loss for the 10th-seeded Trojans.

Ava Baker had two hits, a run and an RBI to lead the third-seeded Comets.

Freddies sweep Trojans to wrap up KMAC slate

Sansom drove in two runs, including the go-ahead score to lead host Fredericktown to a 13-3 win over Centerburg in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Ryleigh Bebout had three hits, Gabby Daniels drove in three runs and five different players each scored twice to lead the Freddies.

Morris had two hits and scored twice to lead the Trojans in the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference finale.

Perkins and Taylor Overholt went for four hits apiece to help the Freddies roll to a 17-4 win at Centerburg on Tuesday, May 11.

Both Overholt and Perkins drove in two runs, and Overholt scored twice for Fredericktown, which scored four runs in the first inning and added five more in the third to build a big lead.

Savannah Dehart and Sarah Stowe had three hits apiece for the Trojans in Tuesday’s game.
