MOUNT VERNON – Carolyn W. Dunham, 83, of Dayton and formerly of Mount Vernon, passed away on Thursday, March 11, 2021, at her home. She was born on May 30, 1937, in Mount Vernon to the late George and Martha (Hawkins) Wagner.

Carolyn graduated from both Mount Vernon High School and The Ohio State University. She was a retired teacher and member of the Gay Street United Methodist Church. Family and traveling were passions her entire life. Her move back to Ohio in the 1990s allowed her to remain close to family, reconnect with classmates and make new friends.

Carolyn spent considerable time with her son’s family and formed a very special bond with both granddaughters. Travel was a lifelong experience. It started with herself, a young college student, borrowing her father’s convertible and driving from Ohio to Colorado for the summer. She especially loved spending time with Gayle and Julia on their sailboat in the Bahamas. Carolyn was aunt to many special nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Finally, quilting and quilt retreats with friends played a large part of her Mount Vernon life.

She is survived by her children, Gayle Dunham (wife, Julia Ashmun) and Scott Dunham (wife, Carrie); and grandchildren, Molly and Abby.

In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. Dunham in 1999; and her brother, G. Daniel Wagner in 2017.

Due to the current pandemic, the family decided to delay any services. A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on July 17 at the Mound View Cemetery, 307 Wooster Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050, with Mr. Roger Marra officiating. Following the service, there will be a social gathering from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Gay Street United Methodist Church, 18 N. Gay St. in Mount Vernon. Carolyn will be laid to rest beside her husband Robert in Mound View Cemetery.
