Roundup: Trojans roll by Lions in DIII 1st round

Already leading 39-31 at the half, the Centerburg boys basketball team held Columbus International to just four points in the third quarter. 

The eighth-seeded Trojans went on to beat the 22nd-seeded Lions 68-47 in the first round of the Division III district tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 24, in Centerburg.

Carter Jones scored 19 points, Colton Martin had 13 points and Levi Houck added 10 points to lead the Trojans (16-3), who led 18-17 after one quarter and outscored International 27-16 in the second half.

Kenyon Jones scored 18 points and Sam Whitaker III added 12 points to pace the Lions (3-8).

Bishop Hartley 49, Highland 43

Braden Blanchard scored five of his 10 points in the third quarter to give host Hartley the lead, and the Hawks sealed a 49-43 win over Highland in the first round of the Division II district tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 23, in Columbus.

Eighth-seeded Hartley, which trailed 13-8 after one quarter and 24-20 at the half, was led by Alex Blein, who scored 12 points on the strength of three 3-pointers in the first half.

The Hawks (13-6) took control in the third and converted on 14 of 18 free throws in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

DJ Donnell and Will Miller added nine points each for Hartley.

Jordan Bellamy scored 19 points, Garrett Fitzpatrick had 10 points and Brock Church added seven points for the 19th-seeded Fighting Scots (5-17).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Dana Bertke and Beth Hardwick caught fire in the second half to help second-seeded Cardington run away from Johnstown 55-37 in a Division III district semifinal on Tuesday, Feb. 23, in Cardington.

Bertke scored 10 of her 16 points and Hardwick scored 10 of her 15 points in the second half to help the Pirates (22-0) pull away, outscoring Johnstown 32-19.

Abigail Adkins led the 11th-seeded Johnnies (9-12) with 14 points.

Worthington Christian 73, Mount Gilead 20

Katherine Weakley, Megan Weakley and Blessing King proved to be too much, leading top-seeded and host Worthington Christian to a 73-20 win over fifth-seeded Mount Gilead in a Division III district semifinal on Tuesday, Feb. 23, in Worthington.

Katherine Weakley scored 13 first half points, and Megan Weakley and King added 12 points each as the Warriors (21-1) built a 45-16 lead at the break.

Katherine Weakley finished with 20 points, Megan Weakley added 18 points on six 3s and King totaled 14 points for Worthington Christian.

Madison Elson led MG (16-8) with six points.
