Roundup: Gompf reaches 1,000 points in MG tourney win

Holly Gompf reached 1,000 career points in leading the Mount Gilead girls basketball team to a 48-34 win over Grandview Heights in the second round of the Division III district tournament on Saturday, Feb. 20, in Mount Gilead.

Gompf led a balanced attack with 11 points, Candace Millisor had 10 points, Aubrey Thomas added nine points and Madilyn Elson chipped in eight points for fifth-seeded MG (16-7).

Gompf, Millisor and Kaitlynn Pfeifer each knocked down 3-pointers to help MG open up a 13-3 lead after one quarter.

Rachel Hartman scored 19 points and Hannah Yochem added 12 points to lead the 17th-seeded Bobcats (5-12).

Danville 76, Shekinah Christian 7

Brooklyn Hess recorded a double-double with 31 points and 10 steals to lead fourth-seeded Danville to a 76-7 win over 18th-seeded Shekinah Christian in the second round of the Division IV district tournament.

Hess scored 25 points in the first quarter alone as the Blue Devils (14-8) raced out to a 60-4 lead at halftime.

Jaylyn Smith and Kylee Hess added eight points each and Ella Proper chipped in seven points for Danville.

Smith had five rebounds, Proper and Alenah Boeshart each dished out five assists, Camie Newbold had seven points and five rebounds, and Rachel Wilson had four steals for the Devils.

Cardington 59, Columbus Academy 45

Second-seeded Cardington posted a17-4 third quarter to create distance on its way to a 59-45 victory over 12th-seeded Columbus Academy in the second round of the Division III district tournament on Saturday, Feb. 20.

Mikayla Linkous scored 12 of her 22 points in the first half to help the Pirates build a 28-22 lead at the break.

Beth Hardwick added 17 points, including 11 in the second half on the strength of a pair of 3s, as Cardington pulled away.

Sophie Spolter scored 19 points, and Diana Ulbrich and Claire Cahall added nine points each for the Vikings (8-8).

Hartley 86, Utica 26

Ella Brandewie scored all of her 20 points in the first half to help host Hartley start fast. The second-seeded Hawks parlayed a 60-11 halftime lead into an 86-26 victory over 16th-seeded Utica in the opening-round of the Division II district tournament on Friday, Feb. 21, in Columbus.

Kami Kortokrax scored 14 points, Kiarra McElrath had 12 points and Bella Parker added 10 points for the Hawks (13-5).

Shawna Blake led Utica (1-22) with 15 points.
