Roundup: Cooper leads Utica in comeback win over NC

Seth Cooper scored eight of his game-best 21 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Utica boys basketball team to a 47-43 come-from-behind victory at Newark Catholic on Friday, Feb. 19, in Newark.

Elijah Larue scored all six of his points in the final frame as Utica overcame a 35-30 deficit at the end of the third quarter against Newark Catholic.

Utica (6-16, 3-12) was a perfect eight-for-eight at the line in the fourth quarter to salt it away, with Larue hitting on all four of his tries.

Cole Canter scored 19 points and Matthew Gialdini added 10 points to pace the Green Wave (7-12, 4-10).

In LCL play on Saturday, Feb. 20, Utica got off to a slow start at home, down 20-3 after one quarter, and fell to visiting Granville 68-43.

Cooper scored 14 points and Zach Heckman added 11 points to pace Utica against Granville.

Jaden Rudder scored 16 points, Carsyn Crouch had 14 points, and Hayden Welles and Dante Varrasso added 10 points apiece for the the Blue Aces (15-7, 10-4).

Danville 53, Northmor 50

Danville used a big second quarter to hold off visiting Northmor 53-50 in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Feb. 20.

Max Payne scored 13 points, Walker Weckesser knocked down a pair of 3s and finished with 12 points, and Wyatt Weckesser added 10 points for the Blue Devils (2-19, 1-12), who outscored Northmor 17-9 in the second frame.

Granville 63, Fredericktown 57

Lincoln Cunningham knocked down six 3-pointers and poured in 28 points to lead sixth-ranked Fredericktown.

But host Granville caught fire in the second quarter with 27 points, and the Blue Aces held off the Freddies 63-57 in non-league play on Friday, Feb. 19.

Will Skerbetz scored 19 points, Carsyn Crouch had 10 points, Jaden Rudder and Hayden Welles added nine points each, and Caden Smith and Dante Varrasso chipped in eight points apiece for the Aces (14-7).

Kaid Carpenter had 12 points, Ty Hatfield scored 10 points and Caleb Sheriff added seven points for the Freddies (19-2).

Granville Christian 66, Mount Gilead 61

Joe Benvie put on a show, pouring in 46 points to lead visiting Granville Christian to a 66-61 non-league victory at Mount Gilead on Friday, Feb. 19.

Benvie rained down four 3s in the fourth quarter alone to help the Lions (9-9) break a 46-all tie through three quarters. He had 10 2s and seven 3s for the game.

Brendon Austin added 12 points for GCA.

Darren Mounts scored 16 points, Matthew Bland had 14 points, and Elijah Chaffin and Jackson Huffer went for 10 points each for MG (7-14), which trailed 36-22 at the half before rallying.
