MOUNT VERNON – Dolores J. “Dory” Purdy, 88, of Mount Vernon, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2021, at Licking Memorial Hospital in Newark. She was born on Jan. 25, 1933, in Medina, the daughter of Chester and Ellora (Davis) Simmons.

Dory enjoyed being a nurse and worked as an LPN for several hospitals before retiring from Knox Community Hospital. She was a longtime member of the Colonial City Moose Lodge and First Christian Church of Mount Vernon. Dory enjoyed dancing, from ballroom to square dancing. If her feet were moving, she was happy. She also liked to play cards, scrabble and golf; and she always looked forward to her annual trips to Las Vegas.

She is survived by three grandchildren; Shaun (Megan) Bemiller, Kyle (Erin) Bemiller and Jason (Michele) Bemiller; five great-grandchildren, Cole Bemiller, Paige Bemiller, Matthew Bemiller, Amanda Bemiller and Nicholas Bemiller; and a brother, Larry Simmons of Millwood. 

Besides her parents, Dory was preceded in death by her husbands, Bruce Walters and Harold Purdy; and her son, Rick Bemiller.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27; at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon, OH 43050; where friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of service. 

Memorial contributions in Dory’s name may be made to the Knox County Humane Society.
