Utica's French wins sectional, Northmor takes district

Kristen Bittner and Maddie Hoverland finished second and third, respectively, to lead the Northmor girls bowling team to a Division II district championship on Monday, Feb. 15, at HP Lanes in Columbus.

Bittner rolled a three-game total of 597 and Hoverland was close behind with 591 in a total field of 75 bowlers to lead the Golden Knights (3,515), who beat out 11 other teams. 

River Valley’s Alexis Manning won a district title with a 603.

The Cardington-Lincoln boys bowling team was district runner-up with a score of 3,740 to finish behind Heath (3,755). Tyler Kintz (588) finished sixth out of 74 bowlers to lead the Pirates, and Silas Horton (541) tied for 17th.

Blake French highlighted the weekend for Utica with a first-place finish in the Division II sectional, bowling a three-game series of 628 to beat out 151 other bowlers on Saturday, Feb. 15, at HP Lanes in Columbus.

Cardington-Lincoln and Centerburg were two of 12 teams that qualified. The Pirates rolled a 3,480 to finish third out of 27 teams, behind sectional champion Heath (3,772). The Trojans finished 11th with a score of 3,274.

Highland (13th, 3,263), Fredericktown (14th, 3,249) and Northmor (15th, 3,210) just missed the cut. Utica (3,015) was 18th and East Knox (2,780) was 22nd.

French (580) came back on Monday to finish seventh in the district tournament. But only the top two teams and two individuals not on qualifying teams advanced to the state tournament, which is Feb. 26-27 at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.

The Fredericktown girls team (3,230) was fourth, Highland (2,961) was seventh and Cardington (2,936) was eighth at district.

Makenna Andrew (517) placed 12th to lead the Freddies, Camryn Taylor (481) was 21st for the Fighting Scots and Sydnie Wilson (454) was 30th for the Pirates.

Individually at district, Utica’s Jordan Lacy (491) was 13th.

The Centerburg boys team (3,409) finished sixth at district. John Wharton (544) led the Trojans with a tie for 15th place.

Highland’s Jesse Reigles (541) finished tied with Cardington’s Silas Horton for 17th place.

The Freddies tied Ridgedale (3,246) for second place out of 22 teams at the girls sectional tournament on Friday, Feb. 12, at HP Lanes. Worthington Christian (3,410) won the sectional tournament, but finished second behind Northmor at district with a score of 3,501.

The Golden Knights (3,191) were fourth, Cardington (2,937) was seventh and Highland (2,695) was 11th at sectional.

Centerburg (13th, 2,606) just missed the cut, followed by Utica (15th, 2,571) and Mount Gilead (20th, 2,196).
