Roundup: Trio leads Fighting Scots over Elgin

The Highland girls basketball team led 10-5 after one quarter and added on from there in a 50-32 win over Marion Elgin in non-league action on Saturday, Feb. 6, in Sparta.

Brylinn Tuggle and Emma West scored 12 points apiece, and Savannah Fitzpatrick added 10 points to lead the Fighting Scots (6-13), who were up 20-11 at the half and 33-18 after three quarters.

Tuggle had a well-rounded game for Highland with five rebounds, four assists and three steals. West added six rebounds and Fitzpatrick had three rebounds.

Gracie Isler had 13 points, 10 rebounds and a pair of steals to pace the Comets (1-18).

Pirates wrap up KMAC undefeated … again

Cardington wrapped up another undefeated season in the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference with a pair of wins over the weekend.

The host Pirates, ranked second in the state, knocked down six 3-pointers as a team to edge rival Mount Gilead 43-36 on Saturday, Feb. 6. That came after they made themselves right at home in Danville on Friday, Feb. 5, with four 3-pointers in the opening quarter as they built a 20-5 lead. Cardington cruised from there to a 50-38 KMAC win over the Blue Devils.

The wins secured the Pirates (18-0, 14-0) an undefeated season in KMAC play for the fourth time in the four seasons of the league’s existence.

Cardington added a third win in four days with a 54-42 win at Clear Fork in non-league play on Monday, Feb. 8, in Bellville.

Dana Bertke scored 12 points, and Beth Hardwick and Mikayla Linkous added nine points apiece in Cardington’s win over MG (14-7, 8-6).

Candace Millisor had 14 points and Holly Gompf scored 12 points to pace MG.

On Friday, Linkous scored 14 points and Bertke added 13 points for the Pirates, who led Danville 33-10 at the break.

Brooklyn Hess led the Blue Devils (10-8, 6-7) with 13 points.

Hardwick led the way with 18 points against Clear Fork, and Emalee Artz scored 12 of her 14 points during Cardington’s 17-7 second quarter to create distance.

Bekah Conrad led the Colts (7-13) with 14 points.

East Knox 85, Horizon Science 11

All 10 of East Knox’s players cracked the scoring column in a lopsided 85-11 win over Horizon Science in non-league play on Saturday, Feb. 6, in Howard.

Laura Keith scored 16 points, Joci Totten had 15 points, Alexandria Magers added 14 points and Shanda Melick chipped in 10 points for the Bulldogs (9-11), who have won three out of their last four games and five of their last seven.

Johnstown 48, Utica 33

Abigail Adkins caught fire with 11 of her game-best 23 points in the second quarter to lead host Johnstown (8-10, 4-8) to a 48-33 win over Utica in Licking County League play on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Shawna Blake paced Utica (1-19, 0-15) with 22 points.
