MOUNT VERNON – Congratulations to eighth-grader Kristen Cobb, who took first place Jan. 7 at the Knox County Spelling Bee.
In addition, Fredericktown fifth-grader Izzy Broerman took second place. The girls competed against other fifth-, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students from all over Knox County.
The spelling bee is for all students grades five through eight. Several weeks ago, the entire fifth-grade class had a spelling test to determine the top 10 spellers in the grade level. Then those 10 students competed against one another in the school spelling bee.
The winner for fifth grade was Izzy Broerman, and the runner-up was Carter Budd.
In grades six to eight, we had students sign up in regard to whether or not they wanted to compete in the school spelling bee.
- The sixth-grade winner was Mary Lee, and the runner-up was Jenna Aurand.
- The seventh-grade winner was Caleb Smith, and the runner-up was Caitlin Roddy.
- The eighth-grade winner was Kristen Cobb, and the runner-up was Pink Payne.
Fredericktown’s participants were Izzy Broerman, Mary Lee, Caitlin Roddy (because the winner, Caleb Smith, could not attend) and Kristen Cobb.
This year’s county overall winner (against all districts and all grades) was Fredericktown eighth-grader Kristen Cobb. Second place (against all districts and all grade levels) was Fredericktown fifth-grader Izzy Broerman.
Students studied the list of words at home over winter break and the competition was held on Jan. 7. Don Garvic, Knox County Education Service Center gifted coordinator, was the monitor and called out the words for each participant to spell. Judges were Knox County commissioners Teresa Bemiller, Thom Collier and Bill Pursel.
Each participant received a T-shirt from the competition.
