Roundup: Keith catches fire in East Knox win over Crestline

Laura Keith caught fire, knocking down six 3-pointers to lead host East Knox by Crestline 80-36 in non-league play on Wednesday, Jan. 20, in Howard.

Keith finished with a game-best 26 points to lead East Knox (6-9), who won their second consectutive game.

Alexandria Magers scored 19 points; Shanda Melick added 10 points; and Hannah McCoy, Joci Totten and Madi Annett each chipped in seven points for East Knox, which opened the game 26-10 and led 45-15 at the break.

Ivy Stewart scored nine points to pace Crestline (2-9).

Ontario 49, Highland 31

Visiting Ontario used a 13-0 second quarter to blow by Highland 49-31 in non-league play on Wednesday, Jan. 20, in Sparta.

Macy Mengan scored 12 points to lead Ontario; and Rylee Nigh and Riley Vaura backed her with nine and eight points, respectively.

Maddy Gordon scored eight points and Brylinn Tuggle added seven points for the Fighting Scots (5-11).

Licking Heights 54, Utica 51

Visiting Licking Heights used a 21-10 fourth-quarter rally to down Utica 54-51 in Licking County League play on Wednesday, Jan. 20.

Madi Werling scored 20 points, Mali Thornton had 12 points and Savanna Cronin added 11 points to lead the Hornets (4-8, 4-5).

Bella Coulter went for 13 points, Shawna Blake and Josie Mueller added 12 points each, and Delaney Kerstetter chipped in 10 points for Utica (1-13, 0-10), which fell for the 10th consecutive time.

Mount Gilead 47, Marion Pleasant 29

Holly Gompf went for 18 points to lead Mount Gilead to a 47-29 win at Pleasant in non-league play on Wednesday, Jan. 20, in Marion.

Candace Millisor backed Gompf with 11 points for MG (12-4), which ran its winning streak to five games.

Whitney Waddell led the Spartans (3-7) with eight points.

Fredericktown 76, Mansfield Temple Christian 12

Four players finished in double figures as Fredericktown outmatched visiting Temple Christian 76-12 in non-league play on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Jacklyn Nussbaum scored 17 points, Audrey Bouton and Gabby Daniels added 12 points apiece, and Celeste Swihart chipped in 10 points to lead the Freddies (12-4), who led 35-0 at the half and 56-2 through three quarters.

Evelyn Day scored five points to lead the Crusaders.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Maria Dobson hit a baseline jumper with 1.9 seconds remaining to lift Mount Vernon Nazarene University to a 65-63 win over host Grace in Crossroads League play on Wednesday, Jan. 20, in Winona Lake, Indiana.

Dobson inbounded the ball to Riley Pireu on the left wing with 5 seconds left, stepped in, got it back and launched the long 2-pointer that found the bottom of the net.

Taylor Gregory went for 25 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks to pace the Cougars (7-8, 4-4), who trailed by four heading into the fourth quarter.

Pireu had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists; and Dobson, who hit a key 3-pointer down the stretch, added 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists for MVNU.

Kyannah Stull led the Lancers (10-10, 1-9) with 25 points and four steals; and Kamryn Hostetler added 10 points, three steals and a pair of assists.

BOWLING

Paige Hicks rolled a 371 series to lead the host Highland girls bowling team to a narrow 1,798-1,790 victory over Mount Vernon in a non-league match on Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Colonial City Lanes in Mount Vernon.

Izzy Moore rolled a 338 series to lead the Yellow Jackets, who closed the gap with a 362-291 Baker round but ultimately fell short.

Trevor Bell (213) and David Balling (208) each rolled 200 games and finished with 392 and 371 series, respectively, to lead the Mount Vernon boys bowling team to a 2,133-2,035 win over the Fighting Scots.

Randy Cain paced Highland with a 366 series.
