Jordan Bellamy caught fire from beyond the arc with six 3-pointers to lead the Highland boys basketball team to a 53-42 win over Delaware Christian in non-league play on Saturday, Jan. 2, in Sparta.
Bellamy buried four of his triples in the second quarter alone as the Scots (2-5) turned a 14-4 deficit at the end of one into a 26-25 lead at the break.
Bellamy finished with a game-best 24 points, Rider Minnick added nine points and Garrett Fitzpatrick chipped in seven points to lead Highland, which won its second consecutive game.
Nathan Stewart had 15 points and James Vasek added 14 points to lead the Eagles (1-3).
Newark 60, Mount Vernon 46
The Yellow Jackets trailed 31-30 at the break before Newark created distance with a big third quarter en route to a 60-46 win in non-league play on Saturday, Jan. 2, at The Hive in Mount Vernon.
Nick Robertson buried four 3-pointers and scored 14 points, Elijah Hinton and Drew Ballinger had 12 points apiece, Jaden Wimbush added 10 points and Grant Burkholder chipped in nine points for the Wildcats (4-2); who knocked down 12 triples for the game and pushed the one-point lead to 48-37 through three quarters.
Blake Meyer scored a game-best 17 points to lead the Yellow Jackets (3-6), who had their three-game winning streak snapped.
Hudson Rohler added eight points, and Owynn Gleason and Beau Bridges chipped in six points apiece for MV.
Fredericktown 71, Tree of Life 46
Lincoln Cunningham scored 28 points and Kaid Carpenter went for 22 points to lead the Freddies to a 71-46 victory over Tree of Life in non-league play.
Caleb Sheriff and Ty Hatfield backed the duo with nine- and eight points, respectively, for Fredericktown (7-0); which led 24-18 after one quarter and added on from there.
David Crow scored 13 points and Micah Fisher added 12 points for the Trojans (3-3).
North Union 48, Northmor 39
Visiting North Union took a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and kept adding on en route to a 48-39 win at Northmor in non-league play on Saturday, Jan. 2.
Zach Vernon had 19 points, five rebounds, three blocks and a pair of steals; and Preston Crabree pitched in 14 points, two assists and a couple of blocks to lead the Wildcats (6-1); who led 29-21 at the half and 41-31 through three quarters.
Preston Harbolt led the Golden Knights (2-7) with 13 points; Graesin Cass had nine points and two assists; and Kooper Keen had eight points, six rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocks.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Emma West scored 10 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter to help Highland pull away from Northmor in a 55-40 victory in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 2.
Maddy Gordon had 12 points and Savannah Fitzpatrick went for 10 points to lead the Scots (4-7, 2-5), who led 12-9 after one quarter, 24-20 at the break and 38-32 through three.
Lexi Wenger scored 13 points and Reagan Swihart added 12 points for the Golden Knights (1-10, 0-7).
Cardington 48, Mount Gilead 41
The Pirates used a 37-21 middle two quarters and held off a late rally to grab a 48-41 win at rival Mount Gilead in KMAC play on Saturday, Jan. 2.
Cardington pushed a 7-6 lead after one quarter to nine at the half and 44-27 through three.
Beth Hardwick and Kambry Edwards scored 14 points each, and Karsyn Edwards added 12 points for the Pirates (10-0, 7-0). The trio combined for all 10 of Cardington’s 3-pointers, with the Edwards sisters knocking down four apiece.
Isabela Schroeter had 15 points and Holly Gompf scored all of her 13 points in the second half to lead MG (7-4, 3-4).
Lexington 50, Mount Vernon 34
Host Lexington outscored the Yellow Jackets 28-10 in the middle two quarters to cruise to a 50-34 victory in Ohio Cardinal Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 2, in Lexington.
Avery Coleman and Madison Basilone converted nine field goals apiece to pace Lexington (3-3, 1-2). Coleman scored a game-best 21 points and Basilone backed her with 18 points.
McKenna Brokaw led the Jackets (3-4, 2-2) with 13 points and Eli Trace added eight points.
BOWLING
David Balling rolled a 412 series to lead all in the Mount Vernon boys bowling team’s 2,105-2,018 win over Wooster in OCC play on Monday, Jan. 4, at Colonial City Lanes in Mount Vernon.
Katrina Wells’ 338 series led the Jacket girls team to a 1,839-1,710 victory in OCC play to complete the sweep over Wooster.
Heath sweeps Utica
Blake French put up a pair of 200 games and rolled a 456 series, but the Utica boys team fell 2,145-1,855 in Licking County League play on Monday, Jan. 4, at Park Lanes Bowling Center in Heath.
Jordan Lacy (347 series) and Meredith Pierpont (323) led the Utica girls team, which fell to Heath 1,824-1,625.
