MOUNT VERNON — Arlene Ruth Hottinger, 92, of Mount Vernon, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2020, at the Mount Vernon Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on Sept. 28, 1928, in Mount Vernon to the late Arvel and Helen (Pauline) Hottinger.

After school, Arlene joined the United States Air Force and became a nurse. She retired as a Lieutenant Colonel and served from 1951 until 1973. Arlene loved the military and her military life. She was proud of serving in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. 

She dearly loved her family and friends and they meant the world to her. Arlene was one of the founders of the charity HopeNow Furniture Bank in Knox County, Ohio. She was very active with the Faith Lutheran Church and loved her many friends there. Animals were the love of her life and she enjoyed all the pets she had throughout the years.  One of her greatest enjoyments was traveling the world with family and friends.      

She is survived by her loving friends, Pam Dalton, Barb and Glen Kandel; niece and nephew, Brenda Spangler, Dick (Sherry) Krieder; and a cousin, Marge Kleer. 

Along with her parents, Arlene is preceded in death by her brother, William Krieder. 

Calling hours will be held on Friday, Nov. 27, from 10-11 a.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050. A graveside service will take place at 1 p.m. in Union Grove Cemetery in Gambier, with Pastor Marvin Haught officiating. Military honors will be observed by the Knox County Joint Veterans Counsel. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Charity of donors choice.
