The Buckeye Big Buck Club recently announced its 2020 Special Award winners.

Randy Wilhelm, of Knox County, was an award recipient for shooting a large deer with a revolver. He was one of the three winners in the Revolver class, which falls under the award category of "Top 3 By Weapons Typical," the Buckeye Big Buck Club's Special Award Winners announcement, published on the club's website, reported.

The Buckeye Big Buck Club is a "unique and original" club that was founded in 1957 in Ohio, the club's website said. The club informs the public of the achievements and awards that members win, while also helping to increase appreciation of the state's white-tailed deer herd, which is currently at a record-high level.

"Big Buck Club was created in 1957 to bring quality trophies to public attention," the club's website said. "Merrill C. Gilfillan, who was an Ohio Department of Natural Resources writer and former Division of Wildlife biologist, founded the club. The formal organization was completed after the club's first awards dinner was held in Columbus in February 1958."

The goals of the Buckeye Big Buck Club include encouraging trophy hunting in Ohio; fostering wise management of resources, especially those resources considered to be valuable; establishing a record of Ohio's trophy deer and maintaining the record; and promoting a positive relationship between landowners and Ohio hunters.

The club annually honors hunters that harvest "typical" as well as "non-typical" deer.

"Each year the club honors hunters who harvest 'typical' deer which meet the minimum 140-inch scoring requirement and 'non-typical' deer meeting a minimum 160-inch score requirement," the club's website said. "Scores are determined by a series of measurements using the Boone and Crockett scoring system."
