Joel Hubbard scored on a 2-yard run late in the third quarter to lift the Mount Vernon football team to a 14-13 win over Big Walnut on Friday night at Yellow Jacket Stadium.
The win is the second in a row for the Yellow Jackets (4-4), who go for a second consecutive winning season at home against Newark next Friday.
Caden Williams broke 50-yard touchdown run with 10:15 left in the third quarter to pull the Golden Eagles (4-5) within a point. But a missed extra point following the long run ended up being the difference in the game.
Williams scored again midway through the period to put Big Walnut up 13-7.
But Hubbard’s go-head score, which came with 1:01 left tied the game and Christian Dean’s point after gave the Jackets the win.
Jonny Askew connected with Gavin Moyer on a 68-yard pass play to give Mount Vernon a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Cardington-Lincoln 54, Johnstown Northridge 13
Nate Hickman threw for three touchdowns in the second quarter alone as the Pirates put up 26 points. Hickman finished with 299 yards and four touchdowns to lead Cardington to a 54-13 win over visiting Northridge in non-league play on Friday night.
Hickman finished 16 of 21 passing for the game and a rushing touchdown to his ledger.
Trey Brininger rushed for 94 yards and two scores on seven carries and added 69 yards and a touchdown on four catches. Ashton Plowman caught four passes for 89 yards and a touchdown and Aiden Plowman carried 10 times for 51 yards and touchdowns on the ground and receiving for the Pirates (5-4).
Nic Minder had nine carries for 79 yards, JD Miller added 11 carries for 72 yards and a score Carl Ferguson had a rushing touchdown to lead the Vikings (2-7).
Fairfield Union 45, Utica 6
Hayden Collins ran for three touchdowns in the first half alone as visiting Fairfield Union built a 35-6 lead at the break en route to a 45-6 win at Utica in non-league play. Play was halted Friday night because of storms and resumed Saturday morning.
Collin McCullough found Clayton Cummons for a 15-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter to get Utica (0-9) on the board, cutting Fairfield Union’s deficit to 14-6. But it was all Falcons (2-7) from there.
Attica Seneca East 27, Northmor 6
Jesse Beckman ran for three touchdowns to lead the Tigers to a non-league win in Galion in a game that started Friday night, but didn’t end until Saturday because of a weather delay and suspension.
Beckman ran for 92 yards on 22 carries and Gavin Hargis rushed for 131 yards on 21 carries and added 93 yards passing on 12 of 19 completions to lead the Tigers (5-4).
Trenton Ramos had five catches for 34 yards and added an interception on defense to lead the Golden Knights (2-7). Max Lower scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter to help Northmor avoid the shutout.
