Figure 8s and heartbreaks

Fowler was prepared for a grand time to put some dirt on his ‘ole Mustang. The lifelong Mount Vernon native claimed his motivation for competing in the event was his ex-girlfriend.

“She told me I couldn’t do the derby,” explained Fowler. “So I took my Mustang, tore it apart, built it up and put it in the derby.”

Fowler took four months to prepare his vehicle for the derby taking up around 100 hours of his time. By the time he got finished for the event, Fowler didn’t even have floor boards in his car causing him to impromptu one of his own with an old sign he had laying around. Fowler’s final touches to his ride were the green and blue paint job he’d given it with his number “420” spray painted in orange on the door of the vehicle.

Going into the Derby, Josh had one other person in his car ... a Mickey Mouse figure that had been glued to the dash for as long as he had the car.

Josh had friends from Wooster come to support him in the event, giving him all more the reason to show out and have a good time. Although he didn’t last long in the derby, he achieved his goal of making it to the event.

Marshall Stull was one of the Knox County locals who chose to compete in the Figure 8 event. Stull, a year graduated from the Knox County Career Center and a native of Danville, took his 1999 Chevy S10 to the arena in spite of his last years’ run in the Rough Truck where his alternator failed. Stull competed in the small trucks division Thursday night and made it to the final round, however he did not finish.

Stull’s expenses on his vehicle amounted to $500, he just got the vehicle running last week and spent only an hour working on it just days prior to the race.

“I bought the truck two years ago for five hundred bucks,” said Stull “It’s been sitting in my garage for about six months.”

With the number ‘8’ and quotes of Ricky Bobby from “Talladega Nights” decorating the white truck with blue spray paint, Stull made it a night to remember this time around at the Knox County Fair.

At this pace who knows what other events Stull will be getting into these upcoming years at the Knox County Fair. But for now, he’s got a truck he needs to scrap.
