The New Philadelphia boys' basketball (5-4, 3-3) team went 2-1 last week to get above the .500 mark, but Coach Zach Ross said the team needs to keep working to reach the most of their potential.

Undefeated No. 1 Ursuline (11-0, 4-0) had no problem taking down No. 16 New Philadelphia (6-5, 5-2) jumping out to a big first half lead and never looking back in a 42-7 rout last week in the opening round of the Division III, Region 9 football tournament.

Keaton Fausel and Etnie Richardson provided a solid rushing attack for New Philadelphia (6-4, 5-2), but the Quakers weren’t able to capitalize and dropped its final game of the regular season in a 20-13 loss to Dover (6-4).

Lexington High School was well represented at this year’s Ohio Cardinal Conference cross country meet, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams winning conference titles.

West Holmes (7-2, 5-1) has been putting up huge numbers for much of the season, but last week it was a defensive battle to the end against New Philadelphia (6-3, 5-2), with the Knights edging out the Quakers 9-8 on a final second touchdown pass from Morgan Smith to Nate Fair.

It was the Keaton Fausel show for New Philadelphia (6-2, 5-1) on Friday night, with the junior quarterback scoring all three touchdowns in a 21-14 win over Lexington (3-5, 2-3).

Last week the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets (16-5, 11-3) won a pair of conference matches, with sweeps against New Philadelphia at home and Madison Comprehensive on the road.

The New Philadelphia Fighting Quakers finished their first season playing in the Ohio Cardinal Conference in 2022, after competing in the East Central Ohio League for 18 seasons. Under second-year head coach Mike Johnson, the Quakers finished with 6-5 overall record last year, for the second straight year.

The New Philadelphia Quakers (6-5) start the season against the Louisville Leopards (3-7) on Aug. 18 at New Philadelphia HS.
