Last week the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets (16-5, 11-3) won a pair of conference matches led by the duo of Kaitlyn Thompson and Tori Burdette, with sweeps against New Philadelphia at home and Madison Comprehensive on the road.
The Yellow Jackets took on the Quakers on Oct. 3 and won 25-14, 25-19 and 25-21. Thompson led the team with 12 kills, while Burdette, Emma Dean and Madi Dudgeon each had six kills. Audrey Stuller had 23 digs and Avery Lasater recorded 10 digs. Burdette had 13 digs and 30 assists in the match. Ady Beaver and Jurnie Gleason each had nine digs
Serving was a key aspect of the match with 18 total aces, led by Dean with nine and Beaver with four.
New Philadelphia was led by Ava Riesen with 11 kills. Kallyn Perks had five of the team’s six aces, and also had 12 digs. Sidney Vandall had 15 digs and Maris Loader recorded 26 assists.
On Oct. 5 against the Rams, Mount Vernon won 25-20, 25-13 and 26-24. Thompson again led the way with 15 kills, while Dean had nine and Gleason had seven. Burdette tallied four kills to go with her 35 assists. Stuller had a phenomenal night on defense with 35 digs. Gleason was also a force defensively with 25 digs and two blocks. Gleason also recorded three aces.
The Yellow Jackets are entering tournament play next week.
