Local boys’ wrestling teams recently competed in their sectional championships last weekend, and below are some highlights of winners and top wrestlers in their respective meets.

It was the Colton Slaughter show in the final game of the regular season, with the senior guard putting up 35 points to lead the New Philadelphia Quakers past Liberty Union in a tight 54-51 win. The scoring surge is now just in time for the postseason, as Slaughter is playing some of his best basketball.

Wrestling dual meet roundup

West Holmes (13-5, 10-1) moved into a tie for first place in the Ohio Cardinal Conference with a key win over OCC leading Mansfield Senior (17-2 11-1), which followed conference wins against Wooster (4-13, 3-7) and New Philadelphia (3-15, 1-9) last week.

The New Philadelphia boys’ basketball team (9-5, 6-3) took a 51-25 conference win over West Holmes on Jan. 20, highlighted by staunch defense and a spread out scoring attack where nine Quakers put points on the board.

The Freddie Invite was held on Jan. 13 with 22 teams competing, and New Philadelphia came away with the top spot with a score of 285.

The New Philadelphia and Wooster boys’ basketball teams battled all four quarters, but the Quakers ended up on the winning side with a 47-42 victory over the Generals on Jan. 9.

Colton Slaughter has consistently been one of the top scorers in the Mount Vernon News coverage area, and last week he helped the New Philadelphia Quakers get above the .500 mark with his hot hand. For that reason, Slaughter is the newest Mount Vernon Athlete of the Week.

The New Philadelphia boys' basketball (5-4, 3-3) team went 2-1 last week to get above the .500 mark, but Coach Zach Ross said the team needs to keep working to reach the most of their potential.

Undefeated No. 1 Ursuline (11-0, 4-0) had no problem taking down No. 16 New Philadelphia (6-5, 5-2) jumping out to a big first half lead and never looking back in a 42-7 rout last week in the opening round of the Division III, Region 9 football tournament.
