West Holmes and New Philadelphia

The No. 6 West Holmes boys’ wrestling team competed in the OHSWCA Division II District Duals at Carrollton on Feb. 4, and while they lost 47-25 in the opening round to No. 3 Steubenville 47-25, the Knights beat No. 7 New Philadelphia 42-32 in the consolation match.

Indian Valley 46, New Philadelphia 24

New Philadelphia had five wins in the match, with one being due to forfeit. In the 138 pound class, Tyler Ulmer beat Rowan Piccin wit a 4-1 decision. Ezekial Williams pinned Brogan O’Conner at 0:36 to win the 157 pound class, and Edgar Mejia-Ramos pinned Cadyn Riggs at 0:36 in the 175 pound class. Etnie Richardson also came away with a win in a 9-6 decision over Tristen Bryan in the 165 pound class.

West Holmes 47, Steubenville 25

In the first match against Steubenville, Peyton Martin beat Talea Guntrum by a 13-0 major decision in the 113 pound class. Cole Porter beat Landon Crosier in the 175 pound class by a 9-5 decision. Dylan Sours won the 190 pound class in a pin of Landy Babel at 2:37. Grant Miller pinned Noah West at 2:2

A highlight of the meet was when state qualifier Hunter McCluggage beat fellow returning state qualifier Ezekiel Williams of New Philadelphia in the 150 pound class by a 4-1 decision. Grant Miller made the jump from the 215 to 285 pound class in the dual meet to beat the seventh ranked Garrett Dillon-Rine by pin.

Mount Vernon

The No. 3 Mount Vernon boys’ wrestling team narrowly lost in the opening round of the OHSWCA Division II District Duals at Darby to No. 6 Lancaster on Feb. 4, but went on to win the consolation match 46-34 against No. 7 Teays Valley.

Lancaster 39, Mount Vernon 36

There were two forfeits for wins, but otherwise wins included: Josiah Colon won the 126 class by 13-3 major decision over Dean Walton. Mason Mitchell won the 150 pound class by 16-0 technical fall over Myles Shiver; Jake Taylor won the 157 pound class by a pin of Jace Thomas at 3:00; Hayden Higgins won the 165 pound class by a pin of Victor Jones at 2:30; Kyler Howard pinned Landon Huffer of Lancaster at 5:45 in the 175 pound class; Alex Taylor defeated Cole Dickerson in the 215 pound class with a 13-8 decision.

Mount Vernon 46 - Teays Valley 34

In the 113 pound class, Brock Blankenhorn pinned Carson Hix at 5:28; In the 144 pound class, Mavrik Gregory beat Hayden Shambaugh defeated Hayden Shambaugh 18-2 by technical fall; Mason Mitchell pinned Rhett Turner  at 1:49 to win the 150 pound class; Jake Taylor beat Aiden Kennedy in the 157 pound class by 19-2 technical fall; Hayden Higgins pinned Peter Graham at 3:30 to win the 165 pound class; Kyler Howard won the 175 pound class by pinning Ethan Schwalbacuch at 2:36; Alex Taylor pinned Tyler Tietz at 0:36 to win the 285 pound class.

Northmor

The No. 3 Northmor wrestling team went 1-1 in the OHSWCA Division III District Duals at Pleasant, beating No. 6 Westfall and then falling to state qualifier No. 2 Pleasant 

Northmor 39, Westfall 33

In the 113 pound class, Brady Carr pinned Noah Furniss at 1:43. Cowin Becker pinned James Curtis at 0:52 to win the 132 class; Thomas Keen pinned Brady Coughlin at 1:56 to win the 138 class; Arius Swaim pinned Ashton Daniels to win the 144 class; Shawn Walker beat Eli Daniels by an 8-4 decision to win the 150 class; Carson Campbell won the 157 pound class with a pin of Joey Wright; and Ethan Littleton pinned Joe Siders at 1:56 to win the 175 pound class.

Pleasant 49, Northmor 23

Carter Thomas won by forfeit in the 106 class; Carr beat Ayden O’Dell 8-1 to win the 113 class; Ethan Amens beat Sean Murphy 6-1 in the 120 pound class; Collin Beck pinned Gabe Spitzer to win the 126 class; and Cowin Becker beat Chase Van Osten by 15-0 technical fall to win the 138 class.

Highland girls’ wrestling

The No. 5 Highland girls’ wrestling team competed in the OHSWCA Regional Duals at Olentangy Orange on Feb. 3, losing to No. 4 Teays Valley in the semifinals and then dropping the consolation match to No. 8 Whetstone.

Teays Valley 44, Marengo Highland 18

In the 135 pound class, Mia Arick pinned Brianna Grambo at 1:01 for the only win on the mat for Marengo. The rest of the victories came by forfeit.

Whetstone 36, Highland 34

Highland narrowly missed taking the consolation match, and had three wins in the match other than forfeits. Kayla Mendez took a win in an 11-5 decision to take the 115 pound class. The next two wins were by pin. In the 170 pound class Caitlyn Mooty had a pin at 3:14, and in the 190 pound class Emma Bolton won by fall at 0:47.
