Central Ohio Technical College announced on May 18 that it received a 2025-26 Innovation of the Year Award from the League for Innovation in the Community College for its Promise programs, which provide free tuition to students in its service region who demonstrate financial need.

The League for Innovation in the Community College is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging and rewarding innovation within community colleges. COTC is among 26 schools across the United States and Canada honored by the League this year. The award recognizes experimental spirit and innovative activities led by faculty, staff, and administrators at member colleges.

In February, COTC implemented its new Licking County Promise program and expanded its existing Knox County Promise and Coshocton County Promise programs. These initiatives allow any new, continuing, or returning student from those counties who reports an annual household income of $100,000 or less on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to be eligible for free tuition. The Licking County Promise will take effect during the summer semester.

"These Promise programs have the potential to change the higher education accessibility landscape of our region," John M. Berry, PhD, president of COTC, said. "Such great financial support exemplifies our steadfast commitment to changing futures for the better. I can’t wait to see its lasting impact."

In addition to receiving the Innovation of the Year Award, five COTC employees were honored with a 2025-26 League Excellence Award. This recognition celebrates leaders, faculty, and staff members who demonstrate leadership and outstanding achievement at their respective community college.

"Being recognized by the League for Innovation is a powerful affirmation of the outstanding work happening at COTC," Berry said. "Our Excellence Award recipients represent the dedication, creativity and leadership that drive student success and meaningful community impact every day. We’re honored to have their efforts recognized at the national level." Further details are available on the organization's website.
