Centerburg Elementary School was named an honorable mention for the Read Live School of the Year Award, according to a recent announcement. The award recognizes schools whose students have shown substantial improvement in reading skills through the use of the Read Live program.
Centerburg Elementary, located in Centerburg, Ohio, received a $100 Read Naturally Gift Certificate. The school utilizes Read Live across Title I, special education intervention, weekly classroom fluency checks, and summer school to provide targeted support based on students’ unique needs. According to Amber Kotzin, Title I Teacher who submitted the nomination, "The program’s structure and user-friendly design allow students to work efficiently while teachers spend their time where it is most effective: one-on-one check-ins with students to observe progress and make instructional adjustments. Students are motivated to work hard because they can see evidence of their progress in the program, and they experience the joy of reading to learn through a wide variety of high-interest nonfiction topics." One student shared, "At first reading was really hard for me, but now I can read more words, and I don’t get stuck as much."
The school reports growth in phonics, fluency, and comprehension among its students. Many have graduated from Title services due to improved reading abilities. Some students have expressed reluctance at leaving the program because they feel successful with it and wish to continue using it in their regular classrooms.
The announcement states that attitudes and outcomes at Centerburg Elementary are improving daily due to these efforts. The school is described as a model of excellence in literacy instruction and is considered a deserving recipient of this recognition.
More information about this recognition can be found in the organization's press release.
